In the summer of 1960 Paul Tillich visited Japan. Together with his
wife Hannah, he spent eight weeks in the country sightseeing,
lecturing, and having discussions with local scholars. This
monograph provides the first comprehensive documentation of Tillich
s journey, highlighting the political context and the itinerary of
his visit. Moreover, Tomoaki Fukai presents the manuscripts of
Tillich s lectures, his conversations with leading Buddhists in
Kyoto, and his correspondence with his Japanese hosts."
Zwischen 1901 und 1914 publizierte Ernst Troeltsch 150 Rezensionen
zu Neuerscheinungen in Theologie, Philosophie, Sozialwissenschaften
und Kulturgeschichte. Viele dieser haufig an weit entlegenen Orten
publizierten Texte waren bisher nicht bekannt. Sie bieten nicht nur
faszinierende Einblicke in Troeltschs Denkwerkstatt, sondern
Christentums.
This volume contains studies on two of the most fascinating
personalities in the academic world of the 20th century. In their
common years in Heidelberg, both Weber and Troeltsch developed a
research program in sociology of religion which was devoted to the
analysis of the "cultural importance" of religion, in particular
Protestant piety. Their common interest in an analytical
explanation of religion as vital power ("Lebensmacht"), however,
resulted in different and competing theoretical programs. The
studies in this book explore the constellations of the two men's
lives and works.
Contemplating religion has long ceased to be the sole privilege of
theology and religious studies. In cultural studies, a broad
spectrum of theories and methods has developed, exploring the role
of religion as an important socio-cultural factor in the modern
world. This volume is a collection of contributions from history
and political studies, sociology and Islamic studies, ethnology,
religious studies and theology, demonstrating and interpreting
these changes in research on religion.
institutionalisierte Religion entschieden kritisiert. In kritischer
Distanz zu etablierten religiosen Institutionen suchen sie auf ihre
spezifische Weise Lebenssinn zu generieren. Insoweit sind sie
selbst zentrale Akteure der modernen Religionsgeschichte."
This volume examines the complex intersections between religion and
enlightenment from a historical and systematic perspective, and for
the first time, shows the profound implications of the works of
Schleiermacher, Troeltsch, and Tillich for understanding
religious-cultural pluralism in our times. The authors use these
sources to discuss the difficulties and challenges facing
contemporary enlightened religion as well as the limitations of
religious enlightenment.
The first volume of Troeltsch-Studien, Neue Folge presents the
results of the 8th international congress of the
Ernst-Troeltsch-Gesellschaft, which was dedicated to the analysis
of the trio of subjects: historical philosophy, theology and
politics. Troelsch presented a view of historicism as a critical
theory of the Modern Age. As a historical philosopher it was his
aim to access chains of transmission which could provide a strong
ethical orientation as a reaction to historical relativistic
experiences; while as a historical theologian he wanted to secure
the continued importance of the Jewish and Christian histories of
the origins of Europe, so that as a historical politician he could
mobilise socio-moral resources to support the fragile Weimar
democracy.
This volume presents 46 reviews and four wide-ranging literature
surveys from 1894 to 1900. These early writings already demonstrate
the broad sweep of the theologian Troeltsch's critical horizon.
Apart from reviewing new publications on dogma, contemporary
ethical models and writings in the philosophy of religion, he also
discussed studies on the history of religion, culture and ideas
since the 17th century, together with texts on the philosophy of
history. These writings, too, reflect his underlying methodological
stance that the diagnosis of the present always aims to (re)form
the present.
