Walking along the streets of downtown Greensboro today, we are
constantly reminded of those who came before us. Their names grace
the cityas street signs,
businesses, plaques, buildings, and markers, demonstrating to us
the extreme growth that has taken place in the 190-year-old history
of this, one of North Carolinaas most-loved cities. With over two
hundred rare images, many never before published, Greensboro takes
readers on a delightful journey back to the days when this small
town was transformed
from a quiet village to a thriving city referred to as both athe
denim capital of America, a because of its mill; and athe Hartford
of the South, a due to its insurance industry. Among these pages we
meet prominent citizens like the Cones, who founded a textile
empire; writer O. Henry; First Lady Dolley Madison; and the famous
Greensboro Four, who challenged segregation with their sit-in at
Woolworthas lunch counter in 1960. We also visit with everyday
people who grew up here and worked in the mills or downtown shops
and firms.
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
This early, extensively illustrated works is a fascinating guide to
Shakespeares Stratford. Many of the earliest books, particularly
those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce
and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works
in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original
text and artwork.
Is avant-garde rock music a contradiction in terms? Avant-garde
trends emerged through the cultural and political upheavals of the
1960's, and acquired a new focus in the later Beatles, drawing upon
many sourcees outside of rock, from John Cage to Cecil Taylor. In
this fresh and challenging look at avant rock, Bill Martin outlines
the entire phenomenon, from Yoko Ono, King Crimson, and Velvet
Underground through the dynamic of progressive rock and punk in the
1970's and the watershed work of Brian Eno, to contemporary figures
who continue to push the boundaries of rock: Sonic Youth,
Stereolab, Merzbow, Bjork, Jim O'Rourke and many others.
This volume considers how ideas were made visible through the
making of art and visual experience occasioned by reception during
the long eighteenth century. The event that gave rise to the
collection was the 15th David Nochol Smith Seminar in
Eighteenth-Century Studies, which launched a new Australian and New
Zealand Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies. Two strands of
interest are explored by the individual authors. The first four
essays work with ideas about material objects and identity
formation, suggesting how the artist's physical environment
contributes to the sense of self, as a practicing artist or
artisan, as an individual patron or collector, or as a woman or
religious outsider. The last four essays address the intellectual
work that can be expressed through or performed by objects. Through
a consideration of the material formation of concepts, this book
explores questions that are implicated by the need to see ideas in
painted, sculpted, illustrated, and designed forms. In doing so, it
introduces new visual materials and novel conceptual models into
traditional accounts of the intellectual history of the
Enlightenment.

International refugee law anticipates state conduct in relation to
nationality, statelessness, and protection. Refugee status under
the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees 1951 and regional
and domestic instruments referring to it can be fully understood
only against the background of international laws regarding
nationality, statelessness, and the consequences of national status
or the lack of it. In this significant addition to the literature a
leading practitioner in these fields examines, in the light of
international law, key issues regarding refugee status including
identification of 'the country of his nationality', concepts of
'effective nationality', and the inclusion within 'persecution' of
a range of acts or omissions focused on nationality.
