Militancy and Violence in West Africa - Religion, politics and radicalisation (Paperback): James Gow, Funmi Olonisakin, Ernst... Militancy and Violence in West Africa - Religion, politics and radicalisation (Paperback)
James Gow, Funmi Olonisakin, Ernst Dijxhoorn
R1,480 Discovery Miles 14 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume provides a systematic and cross-regional analysis of radicalisation, militancy and violence in West Africa. Concern about terrorism in, or from, West Africa, has been recognised in academic research, and the adoption of militarised approaches to addressing it questioned. However, the basis for that questioning - the need to investigate factors such as the historical and socio-economic roots of militancy - is not developed, nor is it substantiated in existing studies. The significant impact of religiously motivated radicalisation and violence in West Africa upon international security makes it essential to understand the issues of militancy and violence in the region. In this volume, the authors draw upon empirical research in West Africa to develop understanding in these areas. Over the course of several chapters written by leading experts in the field, the book successfully blends historical and conceptual analysis with new empirical research gathered from focus group discussions and research interviews. Each of these core studies is structured around five interrelated issues: tracing the antecedents of radicalisation; monitoring trends; identifying actors; anticipating possibilities; and analysing the strength of existing preventive mechanisms. This book will be of much interest to students of African security, African politics, radicalisation, political Islam, war and conflict studies and security studies in general.

Women and Security Governance in Africa (Paperback): Funmi Olonisakin, Awino Okech Women and Security Governance in Africa (Paperback)
Funmi Olonisakin, Awino Okech
R514 Discovery Miles 5 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When United Nations Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security was adopted in October 2000, it was hailed by policy analysts and international observers alike as a path-breaking move. It was the first time that the security concerns of women in situations of armed conflict and their role in peace building were placed on the agenda of the UN Security Council. In the field of international security, there is a tendency to relegate discussions on women and children to the margins. This book addresses a broader debate on security and its governance in a variety of contexts while at the same time making the argument that human security cannot be achieved without placing women at the centre of this policy agenda - for perhaps the single most important measure of the effectiveness of security governance is its impact on women. But this is not just a book about women. Rather it is a book about inclusive human security for Africans, which cannot ignore the central place of women. Written by academics and activists from around Africa, this book fills a gap in the growing field of gender and security. Its African-centred approach - both analytically and through derivative experiences - builds a corpus of approaches that will shape interventions, policy advocacy and programmatic approaches on women's rights and security sector governance. This book is aimed at policymakers, NGOs, development agencies, activists focusing on women's rights, peace and security, as well as scholars in Africa, Europe and North America.

Women, Peace and Security - Translating Policy into Practice (Hardcover): Funmi Olonisakin, Karen Barnes, Eka Ikpe Women, Peace and Security - Translating Policy into Practice (Hardcover)

This book provides a critical assessment of the impact of UN Resolution 1325 by examining the effect of peacebuilding missions on increasing gender equality within conflict-affected countries. UN Resolution 1325 was adopted in October 2000, and was the first time that the security concerns of women in situations of armed conflict and their role in peacebuilding was placed on the agenda of the UN Security Council. It was an important step forward in terms of bringing women's rights and gender equality to bear in the UN's peace and security agenda. More than a decade after the adoption of this Resolution, its practical reality is yet to be substantially felt on the ground in the very societies and regions where women remain disproportionately affected by armed conflict and grossly under-represented in peace processes. This realization, in part, led to the adoption in 2008 and 2009 of three other Security Council Resolutions, on sexual violence in conflict, violence against women, and for the development of indicators to measure progress in addressing women, peace and security issues. The book draws together the findings from eight countries and four regional contexts to provide guidance on how the impact of Resolution 1325 can be measured, and how peacekeeping operations could improve their capacity to effectively engender security. This book will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding, gender studies, the United Nations, international security and IR in general.

Challenges of Security Sector Governance in West Africa (Paperback): Alan Bryden, Boubacar N'Diaye, Funmi Olonisakin Challenges of Security Sector Governance in West Africa (Paperback)
Alan Bryden, Boubacar N'Diaye, Funmi Olonisakin
R908 Discovery Miles 9 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There is currently no comprehensive study of the status of security sector governance in West Africa. Many efforts have been directed either at individual countries or at providing a general analysis of the state and security in Africa. This book is intended to contribute to confidence and peace-building. It develops a better understanding of the challenges of security sector governance and generates practical policy recommendations based on work conducted by West African experts.

Alan Bryden is deputy head of research at the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF).

Boubacar N'Diaye is an associate professor of Africana studies at The College of Wooster (U.S.A.).

Funmi Olonisakin is the director of the Conflict, Security and Development Group (CSDG), King's College, London (U.K.).

Security Sector Transformation in Africa (Paperback): Alan Bryden, Funmi Olonisakin Security Sector Transformation in Africa (Paperback)
Alan Bryden, Funmi Olonisakin
R862 Discovery Miles 8 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The need for security sector transformation (SST) is prominent in the work of scholars, policy makers, and practitioners who focus on the security sector and its governance in Africa. At the heart of this approach is the requirement for comprehensive change to the structure and management of security on the African continent. In this volume, the contributors clarify the relationship between security sector transformation and security sector reform, and provide insight on the challenges and opportunities for an operational security sector transformation agenda in Africa.
