Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

The achievements of the polymath Sir John Lubbock (1834-1913)
spanned banking, politics, science and philanthropy. First
published in 1914, this two-volume biography by Horace G.
Hutchinson (1859-1932) traces Lubbock's extraordinary life and
career. Hutchinson, who knew his subject in later years, paints a
highly favourable portrait of Lubbock's varied accomplishments.
Notably, Lubbock became a partner of his father's bank at
twenty-two, a Member of Parliament in 1870, and in 1900 received
the title of Baron Avebury. Tutored in natural history by Charles
Darwin in his youth, he remained fascinated by evolutionary theory:
it influenced his archaeological and anthropological work,
including Pre-Historic Times as Illustrated by Ancient Remains
(1865) and The Origin of Civilisation and the Primitive Condition
of Man (1870), both reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection.
Volume 1 covers Lubbock's early childhood and private education,
his introduction to banking, and Darwin's influence on his passion
for science.

that by seventy Lubbock was still politically active and in good
health.
Originally published in 1939, this volume attempts to capture some
of the traditions of English rural life during a time of increasing
agricultural mechanisation. Through descriptions gathered from a
number of different authors, the reader is given the sense of rural
communities as being held together by a shared understanding of
these traditions, and of a shared heritage passed down through the
generations. In separating the cultural life of villages from an
increasingly rationalised system of production, modern farming
techniques are seen as creating fundamental changes in this
established existence. This fascinating book will be of value to
anyone with an interest in British history and agricultural
customs.
'l'he papers contained in this volume were originally presented at
the International symposium on New Directions in Urban Systems
Modelling held at the University of Waterloo in July, 1983. The
papers have been reviewed and rewritten since that time. The
exception is the introductory paper written specially by Manfred
Fischer and Peter Nijkamp as an introduction to this volume. The
manuscript was prepared in the word processing unit in the
nepartment of Civil Engineering, university of Waterloo. The
sustained work of Mrs. I. Steffler in preparing this manuscript is
gratefully acknowledged. "'r. R. K. Kumar provided excellent
assistance with the editorial process. The svrnposium and the
