AIA Guide to the Architecture of Washington, DC (Paperback, sixth edition): G. Martin Moeller AIA Guide to the Architecture of Washington, DC (Paperback, sixth edition)
G. Martin Moeller
R858 Discovery Miles 8 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"The model of what a concise, attractive guidebook should be."-Mid-Atlantic Country This lively and informative guide offers tourists, residents, and architecture aficionados insights into nearly 450 of Washington, DC's, most noteworthy buildings and monuments. Organized into 19 discrete walking tours, plus one general tour of peripheral sites, this thoroughly revised sixth edition features projects ranging from early federal landmarks to twenty-first-century commercial, institutional, and residential buildings. It includes some 80 new entries covering dozens of recently completed buildings, along with some historic structures that may have been overlooked in the past. The guide also has updated maps, and many existing entries have been rewritten to reflect recent renovations, changes to the buildings' contexts, or additional scholarship. G. Martin Moeller, Jr., blends informed, concise descriptions with engaging commentary on each landmark, revealing surprising details of the buildings' history and design. Every entry is accompanied by a photograph and includes the structure's location, its architects and designers, and the corresponding dates of completion. Each entry is keyed to an easy-to-read map at the beginning of the tour. From the imposing monuments of Capitol Hill and the Mall to the pastoral suburban enclaves of Foxhall and Cleveland Park, from small memorials to vast commercial and institutional complexes, this guide shows us a Washington that is at once excitingly fresh and comfortably familiar. The additions and revisions incorporated into the latest edition illuminate broader demographic and physical changes in the city, including the emergence of new neighborhoods and the redevelopment of once-neglected areas.

Requirements Engineering for Safety-Critical Systems (Hardcover): Luiz Eduardo G. Martins, Tony Gorschek Requirements Engineering for Safety-Critical Systems (Hardcover)
Luiz Eduardo G. Martins, Tony Gorschek
R2,851 Discovery Miles 28 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Safety-Critical Systems (SCS) are increasingly present in people's daily activities. In the means of transport, in medical treatments, in industrial processes, in the control of air, land, maritime traffic, and many other situations, we use and depend on SCS. The requirements engineering of any system is crucial for the proper development of the same, and it becomes even more relevant for the development of SCS. Requirements Engineering is a discipline that focuses on the development of techniques, methods, processes, and tools that assist in the design of software and systems, covering the activities of elicitation, analysis, modeling and specification, validation, and management of requirements. The complete specification of system requirements establishes the basis for its architectural design. It offers a description of the functional and quality aspects that should guide the implementation and system evolution. In this book, we discuss essential elements of requirements engineering applied to SCS, such as the relationship between safety/hazard analysis and requirements specification, a balance between conservative and agile methodologies during SCS development, the role of requirements engineering in safety cases, and requirements engineering maturity model for SCS. This book provides relevant insights for professionals, students, and researchers interested in improving the quality of the SCS development process, making system requirements a solid foundation for improving the safety and security of future systems.

Making Waves - Worldwide Social Movements, 1750-2005 (Paperback): William G. Martin Making Waves - Worldwide Social Movements, 1750-2005 (Paperback)
William G. Martin
R1,940 Discovery Miles 19 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Making Waves" unearths the successive, worldwide waves of revolts, rebellions, and revolutions that have shaken and remade the world from the eighteenth century to the present. It challenges us to rethink not only our limited conceptions of social movements but the very character and possibilities of social movements. The authors show how successive outbursts of global social protest have undermined world capitalist orders and, through both their successes and their failures, provided the basis for long periods of stable capitalist rule across all the zones of the world-economy. The surprises start in the Age of Revolution, when the antisystemic wave of slave revolts that led to the Haitian Revolution is related to the systemic effects of their combination with the U.S. and French Revolutions. The analysis comes up to the present, when a wave of post-1989 movements points to quite divergent futures based, as in the past, on the search for alternatives to communities organized by capital accumulation, nation-states, and the accelerating commodification and fragmentation of human needs, identities, and desires.

Contemporary Methods and Austrian Economics (Hardcover): Daniel J. D'amico, Adam G. Martin Contemporary Methods and Austrian Economics (Hardcover)
Daniel J. D'amico, Adam G. Martin
R2,777 Discovery Miles 27 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Austrian economics is known for extensive-and many economists would say excessive-ruminations on methodology. Attempting to steer a middle course between radical forms of historicism (there are no economic laws) and scientism (economic laws are as precise as physical laws), this approach often appears to diminish the importance of empirical testing and quantitative methods more generally. Since the Austrian revival of the 1970's, social scientists have developed a number of new theoretical and empirical approaches to studying the social world. Experimental and behavioral economics have exploded in popularity. Econometrics has arguably taken a more central role in the discipline than even formal economic theory. And, most prominently, econometricians have developed quasi-experimental techniques for examining real-world data as part of the "credibility revolution." This volume, Contemporary Methods and Austrian Economics, examines the relationship between Austrian economics and these new social scientific methods. Do Austrian critiques of the excessive ambitions of formal theory and empirical measurement still hold water (if they ever did)? Do the findings of these new approaches bolster or undermine distinctively Austrian theories? How should we update our views on the relationship between abstract economic theory and empirical investigations?

Philosophy, Politics, and Austrian Economics (Hardcover): Daniel J. D'amico, Adam G. Martin Philosophy, Politics, and Austrian Economics (Hardcover)
Daniel J. D'amico, Adam G. Martin
R3,110 Discovery Miles 31 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), as an interdisciplinary endeavour, has surged in popularity in recent years. Work in this field usually draws on standard microeconomics to grapple with questions from political philosophy. But what might Austrian economics, which offers an alternative approach to economic theory, have to offer to this endeavour? Featuring contributions by economists, philosophers, political scientists, and political theorists both friendly to and critical of Austrian ideas, this collection explores what, if anything, Austrian assumptions about human nature and the function of social institutions have to offer the broader field of PPE. The authors explore the relationship of F.A. Hayek's thought to contemporary analysis of democracy, the importance of entrepreneurship for institutional analysis, the possibility and perils of self-governance, and whether Austrian ideas can better explain real-world institutional developments.

Assessing Austrian Economics (Hardcover): Daniel J. D'amico, Adam G. Martin Assessing Austrian Economics (Hardcover)
Daniel J. D'amico, Adam G. Martin
R2,918 Discovery Miles 29 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The modern school of Austrian economics took shape in the 1970s, and reflects the social science questions of its time. Is it still relevant today, considering that the theories that drive contemporary social science have evolved dramatically over the past few decades? While Austrian concerns such as property rights and imperfect cognition have become more common, other aspects of the Austrian thought are even more idiosyncratic than ever. In the ten chapters included here, leading economists explore whether Austrian economics still has unique insights to offer the world of today. Starting with Peter Boettke's lead essay, "What is Wrong with Austrian Economics?", chapters include an array of perspectives responding to this question, ranging from economics, to intellectual history, to political science, and to philosophy. At the end of the volume, Boettke offers a rejoinder, asking, "What is Right About Austrian Economics?" Together, these essays explore the barriers to the spread of Austrian ideas, ask which disciplines might be receptive to them, examine the role of ideology and funding in helping and hindering the school, and consider the advantages and disadvantages of different strategies for expanding engagement with other scholars.

Austrian Economics - The Next Generation (Hardcover): Steven Horwitz Austrian Economics - The Next Generation (Hardcover)
Steven Horwitz; Series edited by Adam G. Martin, Daniel J. D'amico
R2,962 Discovery Miles 29 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Austrian Economics: The Next Generation brings together emerging and established scholars to explore the insights that can be gleaned from applying Austrian economics to a range of different topics. Spanning a variety of related disciplines, from history to politics to public policy, this collection explores a wide range of topics and how they relate to key Austrian themes. How has Austrian economics evolved over the past 40 years? What is the relationship between history and economic theory? How does the Austrian school of economics compare to other evolutionary schools of economic thought? What can public choice theory take from the concept of emergent order? What role does departmental culture play in enabling or deterring police misconduct? How do the multiple forces shaping the evolution of economic inequality interact with one another? What are the limitations of evidence-based policy? To what extent do regulatory agencies recognize key Austrian insights? How does the platform economy affect the possibilities for regulation of traditional utilities? What can a defense of market institutions rooted in market process theory learn from virtue ethics? Is a classical liberal limited state best situated to cope with the darker side of human nature, or might conservatism or social democracy perform better? This collection explores each of these topics in detail, providing fresh takes on a wide range of important topics.

Marked Women - The Cultural Politics of Cervical Cancer in Venezuela (Paperback): Rebecca G. Martinez Marked Women - The Cultural Politics of Cervical Cancer in Venezuela (Paperback)
Rebecca G. Martinez
R751 Discovery Miles 7 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cervical cancer is the third leading cause of death among women in Venezuela, with poor and working-class women bearing the brunt of it. Doctors and public health officials regard promiscuity and poor hygiene-coded indicators for low class, low culture, and bad morals-as risk factors for the disease. Drawing on in-depth fieldwork conducted in two oncology hospitals in Caracas, Marked Women is an ethnography of women's experiences with cervical cancer, the doctors and nurses who treat them, and the public health officials and administrators who set up intervention programs to combat the disease. Rebecca G. Martinez contextualizes patient-doctor interactions within a historical arc of Venezuelan nationalism, modernity, neoliberalism, and Chavismo to understand the scientific, social, and political discourses surrounding the disease. The women, marked as deviant for their sexual transgressions, are not only characterized as engaging in unhygienic, uncultured, and promiscuous behaviors, but also become embodiments of these very behaviors. Ultimately, Marked Women explores how epidemiological risk is a socially, culturally, and historically embedded process-and how this enables cervical cancer to stigmatize women as socially marginal, burdens on society, and threats to the "health" of the modern nation.

Optical Properties of Semiconductors (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1993): G. Martinez Optical Properties of Semiconductors (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1993)
G. Martinez
R5,785 Discovery Miles 57 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is widely recognized that an understanding of the optical pro perties of matter will give a great deal of important information re levant to the fundamental physical properties. This is especially true in semiconductor physics for which, due to the intrinsic low screening of these materials, the optical response is quite rich. Their spectra reflect indeed as well electronic as spin or phonon transitions. This is also in the semiconductor field that artificial structures have been recently developed, showing for the first time specific physical properties related to the low dimentionality of the electronic and vi bronic properties: with this respect the quantum and fractional quan tum Hall effects are among the most well known aspects. The associated reduced screening is also a clear manifestation of these aspects and as such favors new optical properties or at least significantly enhan ces some of them. For all these reasons, it appeared necessary to try to review in a global way what the optical investigation has brought today about the understanding of the physics of semiconductors. This volume collects the papers presented at the NATO Advanced study Inst i tut e on "Optical Properties of Semiconductors" held at the Ettore Majorana Centre, Erice, Sicily on March 9th to 20th, 1992. This school brought together 70 scientists active in research related to optical properties of semiconductors. There were 12 lecturers who pro vided the main contributions ."
