The automotive industry constitutes the backbone of the world's
economy and employs the greatest share of the working population.
It has been contributing to the growth of modern society by
satisfying everyday mobility. However, it has been accused of
affecting the environment and public health, and thus finding new
methods of propulsion for automotives is currently a subject of
intense debate. In this volume, the concept of sustainable
development has been correlated with the main theoretical framework
of production analysis and managerial economics, that is:
manufacturing and architecture theories; theory of comparative
advantage of design location; design driven and design thinking
theories; concepts-knowledge models; rule-based and innovative
design regimes; path dependency theory; literature on breakthrough
and disruptive innovations; studies on technology competition;
reasoned action and planned behavior theories; institutional
theoretical approaches; firm growth theories; smart grid paradigm;
business model innovation; definition of scenarios through analytic
hierarchy process models and consumer framing.
An examination of the greening of the automotive industry by the path dependence of countries and carmakers' trajectories. Three sources of path dependency can be detected: business models, consumer attitudes, and policy regulations. The automobile is changing and the race towards alternative driving systems has started!
One person in four in the industrialized countries suffers from hyperuricemia and is therefore at risk of developing gouty arthritis, nephrolithiasis, or any of the other consequences of urate deposition. At present, far too little is known about urate deposition and the mechanisms by which it occurs, as well as about its clinical consequences, which include formation of toph; over the helix of the ear or in bones close to joints that have never exhibited an attack, development of bursitis, chronic tendovaginitis leading to carpal tunnel syndrome, and gouty paraplegia. Information on these matters is needed to estimate the risks of hyperuricemia and to determine when therapeutic intervention is indicated. The contributions and discussions in this book, resulting from an international symposium held in December 1990 in the Medizinische Poliklinik in Munich, provide an up-to-date source of current knowledge about hyperuricemia in man and its clinical consequences.
