Bruno Latour (Paperback): G. De Vries Bruno Latour (Paperback)
G. De Vries
R586 Discovery Miles 5 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bruno Latour is among the most important figures in contemporary philosophy and social science. His ethnographic studies have revolutionized our understanding of areas as diverse as science, law, politics and religion. To facilitate a more realistic understanding of the world, Latour has introduced a radically fresh philosophical terminology and a new approach to social science, Actor-Network Theory . In seminal works such as Laboratory Life, We Have Never Been Modern and An Inquiry into Modes of Existence, Latour has outlined an alternative to the foundational categories of modern western thought D particularly its distinction between society and nature D that has major consequences for our understanding of the ecological crisis and of the role of science in democratic societies. Latour s empirical philosophy has evolved considerably over the past four decades. In this lucid and compelling book, Gerard de Vries provides one of the first overviews of Latour s work. He guides readers through Latour s main publications, from his early ethnographies to his more recent philosophical works, showing with considerable skill how Latour s ideas have developed. This book will be of great value to students and scholars attempting to come to terms with the immense challenge posed by Latour s thought. It will be of interest to those studying philosophy, anthropology, sociology, science and technology studies, and almost all other branches of the social sciences and humanities.

Sampling Theory for Forest Inventory - A Teach-Yourself Course (Paperback): Pieter G. De Vries Sampling Theory for Forest Inventory - A Teach-Yourself Course (Paperback)
Pieter G. De Vries
R4,284 Discovery Miles 42 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Forest inventory may be defined as the technique of collecting, evaluating and presenting specified information on forest areas. Because of the generally la ge extent of forest areas, data are usually collected by sampling, i.e. by making observations on only part of the area of interest. As there are many different sampling methods (e.g. Appendix 1), a choice must first be made as to which method suits the given field and financial circumstances best. On completion of the sampling procedure, the numerous data collected have next to be condensed to manageable representative quantities. Finally, from these quantities, inferences about the situation in the entire forest area are made, preferably accompanied by an indication of their reliability. This book is intended for students who want to know the whepefope of the sampling techniques used in forest inventory. The danger of lack of knowledge is a blind following of instructions and copying statistical formulae, or, even worse, feeding data into a computer loaded with a program that is said to print out the required information. In serious persons, such approaches may leave a feeling of dissatisfaction or even of professional incompetence, be cause of inability to direct or evaluate the procedure critically. If a student tries to improve his or her situation, he/she will find that the few existing forest inventory textbooks, though some with merit, either use confusing statistical symbols or do not adequately cover theoretical principles."

Jan G de Vries, Jorri C. Duursma, Egbert K. Duursma
R394 Discovery Miles 3 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although leaked chemical warfare (CW) gases rapidly hydrolyse in sea water, potential risks of serious contamination will exist for many decades for sailors, fishermen and coastal visitors of the Baltic Sea and Skagerak, in particular concerning contact with lumps of mustard gas. Blue prints of emergency plans should be available in order to confine, bury or destroy ammunition at risk. For that reason bottom current maps should be available to predict the transport of lumps over the sea bottom. Test should be made in hydraulic laboratories about the correlation water current and lump transport. Modelling may predict the hotspots in the future. This is an updated document.
