Modern Irish Writers - A Bio-Critical Sourcebook (Hardcover, New): Alexander G. Gonzalez Modern Irish Writers - A Bio-Critical Sourcebook (Hardcover, New)
Alexander G. Gonzalez
R2,439 Discovery Miles 24 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While the Irish Literary Revival began around 1885 and ended somewhere between 1925 and 1940, the Irish Renaissance has continued to the present day and shows no sign of abating. The period has produced some of the most important and influential figures in Irish literature, some of whom are counted among the world's greatest authors. The Revival saw a reestablishment of Ireland's literary connections with its Celtic heritage, and writers such as William Butler Yeats and Lady Gregory drew heavily on the myths and legends of the past. James Joyce boldly reshaped the novel and wrote short fiction of enduring value. Contemporary Irish writers continue to be leading figures and include such authors as Brian Frigl, Seamus Heaney, and Eavan Boland.

Included in this reference book are alphabetically arranged entries for more than 70 modern Irish writers, including Samuel Beckett, William Trevor, Patrick Kavanagh, Medbh McGuckian, Sean O'Casey, J. M. Synge, and Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill. Entries are written by expert contributors and reflect a broad range of perspectives. Each entry contains a brief biography that summarizes the author's career, a discussion of major works and themes, an overview of the author's critical reception, and a bibliography of primary and secondary works. An introductory essay reviews the large and growing body of scholarship on modern Irish literature, while an extensive bibliography concludes the volume.

Las Desaparecidas (English, Spanish, Hardcover): Dario G Gonzalez Las Desaparecidas (English, Spanish, Hardcover)
Dario G Gonzalez
R822 Discovery Miles 8 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Within and Beyond Citizenship - Borders, Membership and Belonging (Hardcover): Roberto G. Gonzales, Nando Sigona Within and Beyond Citizenship - Borders, Membership and Belonging (Hardcover)
Roberto G. Gonzales, Nando Sigona
R3,881 Discovery Miles 38 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Within and Beyond Citizenship brings together cutting-edge research in sociology and social anthropology on the relationship between immigration status, rights and belonging in contemporary societies of immigration. It offers new insights into the ways in which political membership is experienced, spatially and bureaucratically constructed, and actively negotiated and contested in the everyday lives of citizens and non-citizens. Themes, concepts and ideas covered include: The shifting position of the non-citizen in contemporary immigration societies; The intersection of human mobility, immigration control and articulations of citizenship; Activism and everyday practices of membership and belonging; Tension in policy and practice between coexisting traditions and regimes of rights; Mixed status families, belonging and citizenship; The ways in which immigration status (or its absence) intersects with social cleavages such as age, class, gender and 'race' to shape social relations. This book will appeal to academics and practitioners working in the disciplines of Social and Political Anthropology, Sociology, Social Policy, Human Geography, Political Sciences, Citizenship Studies and Migration Studies.

Guest Workers or Colonized Labor? - Mexican Labor Migration to the United States (Paperback): Gilbert G. Gonzalez Guest Workers or Colonized Labor? - Mexican Labor Migration to the United States (Paperback)
Gilbert G. Gonzalez
R1,329 Discovery Miles 13 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Scholars and journalists have looked mostly to Mexico's own economy and society for the chief causes of Mexican migration to the United States. This book presents a strikingly contrasting explanation and offers a persuasive historical re-examination of the history of relations between the two countries. Gilbert Gonzalez dispels the myth that Mexican migration conforms to the pattern of earlier European migrations. Mexican migration, he shows, is the social consequence of U.S. economic domination over Mexico. Since the late nineteenth century, powerful U.S. capitalist enterprises have controlled important sectors of the Mexican economy, a dominance that uprooted peasants and small farmers from traditional farming villages. Those uprooted turned to internal migration and then proceeded into the U.S. to be integrated into the largest capitalist corporations in the world. The mass migration has had a number of implications, from indentured labor to legal and illegal labor. Gonzalez's book examines recent Bush initiatives, NAFTA measures, and the history of antecedent bracero programs supported by the U.S. government and business to show how colonial explanations of migration better fit historical patterns.

Contemporary Irish Women Poets - Some Male Perspectives (Hardcover, New): Alexander G. Gonzalez Contemporary Irish Women Poets - Some Male Perspectives (Hardcover, New)
Alexander G. Gonzalez
R2,686 Discovery Miles 26 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

So many male critics have attacked Ireland's contemporary women poets -- whether through hostile reviews, outright silence, or condescending praise -- that the impression has been created that very few men appreciate these women's poetry. Gonzalez has produced the first book ever to appear in Irish studies in which men make it a point to praise literature written by Irish women. Included are two essays studying the structure of Eavan Boland's poetry sequences, some close readings of Medbh McGuckian's most challenging poems, and the first formal scholarly pieces ever devoted exclusively to Paula Meehan, Rita Ann Higgins, and Mary O'Malley. Additional chapters treat the works of Eilean Ni Chuilleanain and Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill.

Women poets have made substantial contributions to Irish literature, particularly in the last few decades. However, so many male critics have attacked Ireland's women poets, whether through hostile reviews, outright silence, or condescending praise, that the impression has been created that very few men appreciate these women's poetry. With some notable exceptions, most academic appraisals by men have been less than enthusiastic. Many women also point to the treatment these poets receive in various anthologies, which typically include only token portions of literature written by women. In his book, Gonzalez has responded to these slights by offering a forum to a significant number of men to express their highest praise for Ireland's women poets.

Until now, no book has ever appeared in Irish studies in which men make it a point to praise literature written by Irish women. In this book, Gonzalez includes two essays on each of Ireland's best-known women poets, Eavan Boland, Eilean Ni Chuilleanain, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, and Medbh McGuckian. Three other essays are the first formal scholarly pieces entirely dedicated to Paula Meehan, Rita Ann Higgins, or Mary O'Malley. In his pioneering effort, Gonzalez helps establish the place of these contemporary women poets in the Irish literary canon, corrects the popular misconception that male critics are unresponsive to their works, and encourages further exploration of Irish women poets by male scholars and critics.

Assessing the Achievement of J. M. Synge (Hardcover, New): Alexander G. Gonzalez Assessing the Achievement of J. M. Synge (Hardcover, New)
Alexander G. Gonzalez
R2,688 Discovery Miles 26 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Though J. M. Synge is considered a major figure of Irish drama and an important canonical playwright, he is the subject of fewer and fewer books and conference sessions. In this volume, chapters by expert contributors confront the possibility that Synge's reputation may not be standing the test of time. The chapters reaffirm the relevance of Synge's plays to contemporary audiences and readers and invite a reassessment of his apparently declining popularity. Comparisions of Synge's work to that of other authors reinforce the argument in favor of his continuing relevance.

J. M. Synge is generally considered one of the most important Irish dramatists, and his standing within the larger canon of world literature usually goes unchallenged. But his reputation may not be standing the test of time. A relative dearth of presentations on Synge's work at major national and international conferences and even at regional Irish studies conferences suggests that he is not studied as much as he once was, especially relative to other Irish authors such as Joyce, Yeats, O'Casey, and even Paul Muldoon and Eavan Boland. Tolerance for some of Synge's once-hailed extragavance is also lessening among students of his drama.

The expert contributors of this book demonstrate that Synge's work is of continuing relevance to contemporary audiences and readers. Each of its essays illuminates the worth of Synge's dramatic canon either by some form of reassessment of individual plays or by comparison of Synge's work to that of authors whose reputation is still indisputably well established, such as Yeats, or to that of contemporary authors whose work is much in the public eye, such as Salman Rushdie. New approaches, including a feminist study of the language of Synge's heroines, also help establish the continued relevance of his drama to contemporary readers.

'This book can be a guide for regulators as they make decisions about issues such as affordability and access to special programs that may have been deprived of the attention they merit in the past.' - Ashley Brown, Harvard University, US Energy Justice: US and International Perspectives is a pioneering analysis of energy law and policy through the framework of energy justice. While climate change has triggered unprecedented investment in renewable energy, the concept of energy justice and its practical application to energy law and policy remain under-theorized. This volume breaks new ground by examining a range of energy justice regulatory challenges from the perspective of international law, US law, and foreign domestic law. The book illuminates the theory of energy justice while emphasizing practical solutions that hasten the transition from fossil fuels and address the inequities that plague energy systems. Among the first edited volumes to focus wholly on the emerging field of energy justice, this book takes a multidisciplinary approach that examines energy law and policy through the lens of environmental justice, climate justice, indigenous rights, human rights, and energy democracy. Contributions from prominent scholars and practitioners demonstrate how energy justice frameworks can be applied in theory and practice. With a foreword by Dr Robert Bullard, Energy Justice is a critical resource for: law students and professors; researchers, students and faculty of graduate and undergraduate courses in the area of energy and the environment; and advocates and policymakers in the area of energy and the environment. "Lucidly written, widely informed, and uncompromisingly honest -- a valuable expose." Michael Parenti "Documents the stunning success of a network of wealthy donors and corporations in creating and sustaining a set of think tanks, legal action groups, and media strategies." Gary Orfield, Harvard University What explains the electoral success of Republicans, particularly of the ascendant neoconservatives who now dominate the Party? Based on a thorough and up-to-date examination of the New Right over twenty-five years, The Politics of Fear proposes some provocative answers, including globalization, new technologies, and a far-reaching network of right-wing think tanks and foundations. As the authors show, all have opened the doors to a new politics of fear successfully waged by the neoconservatives. By manipulating insecurity, the New Right has created an extraordinarily successful populist conservative movement. Utilizing extensive documentation, the authors argue convincingly that the fear of immigrants and racial minorities has served as the most effective tactic in the GOP arsenal, while their approach also implicates gays, feminists, and terrorists. The book explains why Americans have willingly supported a party that promises them security, just as it delivers greater economic and political insecurity. The authors argue that, despite their striking political successes, neoconservatives have delivered to voters a set of policies harmful to working Americans in the way of regressive tax measures, military exploits, tort reform, deregulation, and environmental destruction.

Guest Workers or Colonized Labor? - Mexican Labor Migration to the United States (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Gilbert G. Gonzalez Guest Workers or Colonized Labor? - Mexican Labor Migration to the United States (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Gilbert G. Gonzalez
R5,296 Discovery Miles 52 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A decade of political infighting over comprehensive immigration reform appears at an end, after the 2012 election motivated the Republican Party to work with the Democratic Party's immigration reform agendas. However, a guest worker program within current reform proposals is generally overlooked by the public and by activist organizations. Also overlooked is significant corporate lobbying that affects legislation. This updated edition critically examines the new guest worker program included in the White House and Congressional bipartisan committee s immigration reform blueprints and puts the debate into historical and contemporary contexts. It describes how the influential U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO agreed on guidelines for a new guest worker program to be included in the plan. Gonzalez shows how guest worker programs stand within a history of utilizing controlled, cheap, disposable labor with lofty projections rarely upheld. For courses in a wide variety of disciplines, this timely text taps into trends toward teaching immigration politics and policy.Features of the New Edition"

The Cambridge Handbook of Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development (Paperback): Sumudu A. Atapattu, Carmen G Gonzalez,... The Cambridge Handbook of Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development (Paperback)
Sumudu A. Atapattu, Carmen G Gonzalez, Sara L. Seck
R979 Discovery Miles 9 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite the global endorsement of the Sustainable Development Goals, environmental justice struggles are growing all over the world. These struggles are not isolated injustices, but symptoms of interlocking forms of oppression that privilege the few while inflicting misery on the many and threatening ecological collapse. This handbook offers critical perspectives on the multi-dimensional, intersectional nature of environmental injustice and the cross-cutting forms of oppression that unite and divide these struggles, including gender, race, poverty, and indigeneity. The work sheds new light on the often-neglected social dimension of sustainability and its relationship to human rights and environmental justice. Using a variety of legal frameworks and case studies from around the world, this volume illustrates the importance of overcoming the fragmentation of these legal frameworks and social movements in order to develop holistic solutions that promote justice and protect the planet's ecosystems at a time of intensifying economic and ecological crisis.
