Quite a few excellent books about vibrational spectroscopy have already been published. So why write a new one? The last years have seen the birth of new techniques and, first of all, a wealth of new applications. Therefore, a lot of new users need an introduction to these techniques and applications, but, if they are new to vibrational spectroscopy, an introduction to the parent techniques as well. Vibrational spectroscopies can detect and analyze vibrations in molecules. Mainly two different forms are used today: Infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Vibrational spectroscopy is used by chemists to characterize their substances. If the spectra of substances are known, analytical chemists can use them to analyze a mixture of chemicals. Samples may be analyzed even with spatial resolution, on the microscopic as well as on the macroscopic scale. "Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy" is intended for researchers or lecturers in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and Life Sciences, who are interested in the composition and properties of their samples. It describes how vibrational spectroscopy will enable them to examine thin layers, surfaces and interfaces, and also improve their knowledge about the properties of composites. Special chapters introduce VCD, ROA, and TERS. The book can serve as a short introduction to vibrational spectroscopy too, so that students at the first graduate level will benefit from it as well.

This book presents a new methodological analysis of two competing research paradigms of artificial intelligence and cognitive science-the symbolic versus the connectionist paradigms. Providing an accessible introduction to the fundamentals of both paradigms, the book derives new objectives for future research that will help to integrate aspects of both areas to obtain more powerful AI techniques and to promote a deeper understanding of cognition.

Die internationale Forschung ist seit Jahrzehnten bemuht, die lang- fristigen Tendenzen in der Entwicklung der Gesamtwirtschaft wie der einzelnen Bereiche quantitativ aufzuzeigen. Sie dient damit einmal der Verifikationsmoglichkeit wachstumstheoretischer Hypothesen. Sie will damit zum anderen durch das AusmaB und die Systematik der quantita- tiven Informationen zur Formulierung neuer wachstumstheoretischer Annahmen anregen. J edenfalls entbehrt die internationale Forschung seit langem schon entsprechender Informationen fUr das Deutsche Reich. Diese Lucke soIl vorlaufig durch die vorliegenden Untersuchungen geschlossen werden. Durch die Analyse der langfristigen Tendenzen soIl zugleich ein Bezugssystem geschaffen werden fUr die zahlreichen kurzfristigen Veranderungen, die sich im Laufe eines J ahrhunderts in einer V olks- wirtschaft vollziehen. Wahrend nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg noch die Neigung bestand, den Trend zunachst "auszuschalten", um die kurz- fristigen Schwankungen fUr sich sichtbar zu machen, hat sich das metho- dische Bild in der Zwischenzeit dahingehend geandert, daB der lang- fristige ProzeB nicht als verstehbar betrachtet wird ohne die kurzfristi- gen Veranderungen und umgekehrt die kurzfristigen Veranderungen in ihrem AusmaB und ihrer Form kaum ohne die zugrundeliegenden Wachstumstendenzen interpretiert werden konnen.

Im Tagungsband zur Informationstagung "Mikroelektronik 87" werden die in Form von KurzvortrAgen und Posters dargebotenen BeitrAge in A1/4bersichtlicher Form prAsentiert und geben einen guten Aoeberblick A1/4ber den aktuellen Forschungs- und Wissensstand zu den Themenkreisen "Technologie und ZuverlAssigkeit von Bauteilen und Systemen," "Sensoren in Industrie und Umweltschutz," "Elektronik im Verkehr," "Nachrichtentechnik und Datenkommunikation," "Medizintechnik und Biologie" und "Weltraum und Satellitentechnik." Die Autoren kommen aus Industrie und Forschung, so daA sowohl theorie- als auch praxisbezogene Erkenntnisse und Produkte vorgestellt werden. Die Tagung "Mikroelektronik" findet seit dem Jahr 1975 im Abstand von zwei Jahren statt und hat seitdem eine kontinuierliche Ausweitung im Vortragsangebot und im Publikumsinteresse erfahren. Der Tagungsband soll dazu beitragen, einer noch grAAeren Zahl von Interessenten eine Aoeberschau A1/4ber Stand und Zukunft der Mikroelektronik sowie Berichte A1/4ber konkrete Applikationen, Methoden und Entwicklungen zu geben.
