The differentiation between the muscarinic and the nicotinic ef-
fects of acetylcholine led to the subdivision of the cholinergic
ner- vous system into two categories. Further studies showed that
stimu- lating and inhibiting muscarinic effects could be
demonstrated in different organs. For instance, gastric secretion
and gastrointestinal motility are stimulated, while heart rate and
the vascular muscula- ture are inhibited. For decades, it could not
be determined whether the various ef- fects were mediated by
different subgroups of muscarinic receptors, but eventually, with
the availability of agonists and antagonists to muscarinic
receptors, and using various techniques, the existence of at least
two such subgroups could be ascertained . . Mt receptors are
defined by their high affinity for the antagonist pirenzipine in
comparison to M2 receptors. This subdivision of muscarinic
receptors has since been proved beyond doubt by experi- ments in
vivo and in vitro, by receptor binding studies, by histoauto-
radiography, and by electrophysiological studies. However, these
different classes of muscarinic receptors have not been found to
relate to different types of effects; instead both excit- atory and
inhibitory effects appear to be linked to each class. For ex-
ample, excitation of gut motility and inhibition of cardiac
contrac- tile activities both appear to be mediated by M2
receptors, while ex- citation of some nerves in sympathetic ganglia
and inhibition of some myenteric nerves may be mediated by M
receptors.

Symposium (26. Januar 1985) tiber Hochfrequenzdiathermie in der
Endoskopie ist eben so wie der 16. KongreB in Erlangen (20.121.
Handeln. Dieses Handeln hat die operative Therapie hervorgebracht.

This study describes the inner design of military forces in a
German democracy-Innere Fuehrung-in the face of new challenges.
"Transformation" and its various manifestations, including EBAO and
NCW/NCO are contrasted with Innere Fuehrung. Differences of
contemporary NATO, U.S., and German concepts are discussed and
possible connection points for Innere Fuehrung are highlighted. Some
of the approaches examined are dominated by the extensive use of
technology. The analysis is focused on a possible contradiction
between technology and Innere Fuehrung as an enabler of successful
interagency cooperation. The study concludes that Innere Fuehrung
is a guiding principle based on the application of the German
constitution, the Basic Law, to the reality of soldierly service.
In contrast to Transformation or RMA, Innere Fuehrung emphasizes
the human being as a citizen rather than technology as tools of
war. Innere Fuehrung constitutes the heart of the Bundeswehr's
institutional culture and remains applicable in the present.
Citizens in uniform at home in the pluralism of state and society
are best able to adapt to the security and defense challenges of
the present-in contrast to an exclusive military caste or an
outsourced mercenary horde.
