This book explores past expressions of the Jewish interest in Hinduism in order to learn what Hinduism has meant to Jews living mainly in the 12th through the 19th centuries. India and Hinduism, though never at the center of Jewish thought, claim a place in its history, in the picture Jews held of the wider world, of other religions and other human beings. Each chapter focuses on a specific author or text and examines the literary context as well as the cultural context, within and outside Jewish society, that provided images and ideas about India and its religions. Overall the volume constructs a history of ideas that changed over time with different writers in different settings. It will be especially relevant to scholars interested in Jewish thought, comparative religion, interreligious dialogue, and intellectual history.

This book presents both common and uncommon dermatologic differential diagnoses in a problem-oriented manner. Unlike other atlases that catalogue diseases, it stresses the viewpoint of the clinician. A repeatable and discerning approach to evaluating skin diseases is the unifying theme. Algorithms, clinical photographs, and tables that compare diseases present specific points important in arriving at the correct diagnosis. To facilitate accurate diagnoses, several different approaches have been used: the reader who knows the differential diagnosis in question can go directly to the appropriate table or discussion as appropriate. If the diagnosis is unclear, possible diagnoses can be obtained by following the algorithms presented at the beginning of each chapter. In each chapter, tables of differential diagnoses for different types of eruptions or neoplasms are included with accompanying illustrative photographs. The aetiology, important clinical features, and therapy for each disease are succinctly presented in the last section of each chapter. New for this edition, the final chapter provides a series of self-assessment cases, including explanations at each stage of the diagnostic process, with which the reader can test their knowledge.
Capitalism is central to our understanding of contemporary economic and political life and yet what does it really mean? If, as has now been shown to be the case, capital and property rights existed in pre-modern and pre-capitalist societies, what is left of our understanding of capitalism? Steven G. Marks' provocative new book calls into question everything we thought we knew about capitalism, from the word's very origins and development to the drivers of Western economic growth. Ranging from the Middle Ages to the present, The Information Nexus reveals that the truly distinctive feature of capitalism is business's drive to acquire and analyze information, supported by governments that allow unfettered access to public data. This new interpretation of capitalism helps to explain the rise of the West, puts our current information age into historical perspective, and provides a benchmark for the comparative assessment of economic systems in today's globalized environment.

In this sweeping history, Steven Marks tells the fascinating story of how Russian figures, ideas, and movements changed our world in dramatic but often unattributed ways. On Europe's periphery, Russia was an early modernizing nation whose troubles stimulated intellectuals to develop radical and utopian alternatives to Western models of modernity. These provocative ideas gave rise to cultural and political innovations that were exported and adopted worldwide. Wherever there was discontent with modern existence or traditional societies were undergoing transformation, anti-Western sentiments arose. Many people perceived the Russian soul as the antithesis of the capitalist, imperialist West and turned to Russian ideas for inspiration and even salvation. Steven Marks shows that in this turbulent atmosphere of the past century and a half, Russia's lines of influence were many and reached far. Russia gave the world new ways of writing novels. It launched cutting-edge trends in ballet, theater, and art that revolutionized contemporary cultural life. The Russian anarchist movement benignly shaped the rise of vegetarianism and environmentalism while also giving birth to the violent methods of modern terrorist organizations. Tolstoy's visions of nonviolent resistance inspired Gandhi and the U.S. Civil Rights movement at the same time that Russian anti-Semitic conspiracy theories intoxicated right-wing extremists the world over. And dictators from Mussolini and Hitler to Mao and Saddam Hussein learned from the experiments of the Soviet regime. Moving gracefully from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Beijing and Berlin, London and Luanda, Mexico and Mississippi, Marks takes us on an intellectual tour of the Russian exports that shaped the twentieth century. The result is a richly textured and stunningly original account of the extent to which Russia--as an idea and a producer of ideas--has contributed to the making of the modern world. Placing Russia in its global context, the book betters our understanding of the anti-Western strivings that have been such a prominent feature of recent history.
Along a busy downtown street in the small city of Natchez, Mississippi, is a place where magic happens. The place is the Natchez Children's Home, where, for more than a century, hundreds of children in need of a safe haven and a "family" have been taken in. I wrote this book not only as a tribute to the Children's Home and its dedicated staff but to tell the story of the children through the eyes of a child, one who actually could have been one of those in need. Remarkably, the Children's Home has survived - sometimes not so easily - on private contributions and fund-raisers. In this book, Laura Lee Walker is brought to the Children's Home by her ailing grandmother. There, Laura Lee finds love and friendship, all the while longing for a family of her own. She creates a fictitious aunt - Aunt Helen - to whom she writes letters that go unanswered until one day when a young reporter, Tracy Hawkins, comes into Laura Lee's life. Just when everything seems to be going right in her life, Laura Lee meets up with her father, Cass Walker, who has vowed to kill her. The story is suspenseful, inspirational and heartwarming.
A Dance From the Heart and Other Stories is a compelling, endearing collection of short stories about children who help and inspire each other at Christmas.
"The Hunt" is an intense suspense outdoor novel. Four young friends go hunting for a prize buck ... where and when they shouldn't. What starts as a great adventure, turns into a fight for life and death.
