Was CUNO HOFFMEISTER zu Beginn des Vorworts der ersten Auflage uber die Schwierigkeiten der Literaturauswahl schrieb, galt naturlich nicht nur fur ihn damals, sondern es gilt fur uns heute in verstarktem Masse. Zwar hat, nicht zuletzt durch die Aktivitat der Internationalen Astronomischen Union, die Anzahl zusammen- fassender Darstellungen von Teilgebieten, die beispielsweise auf Symposien oder Kolloquien behandelt wurden, stark zugenommen. Die Autoren dieser zweiten Auflage konnten und mussten hierauf vielfaltig zuruckgreifen und verweisen. Dieser Bericht A1/4ber die Katamnesen an 230 Patienten verbindet die Neuropsychiatrie des Kindes- und Judendalters mit der des Erwachsenenalters. Die Patienten waren nach dem Intelligenzgrad in 3 Gruppen eingeteilt und wurden 10 Jahre nach ihrer Entlassung untersucht sowohl im Hinblick auf ihren kArperlichen und psychischen Zustand als auch auf ihre soziale Stellung. Aus den Ergebnissen dieser Langzeituntersuchungen werden u.a. wichtige Konsequenzen fA1/4r die soziale Integration gezogen.

Als das MATHEMATISCHE VORSEMESTER im Herbst 1970 erstmals vom Westdeutschen Rundfunk, dem Kultusministerium des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen und der Uni- versitat Bielefeld veranstaltet wurde, war es auch ein GroBexperiment fUr das geplante Fer n stu diu m im Medienverbund. Beim Ringen urn EinfluB im ter- tiaren Bildungssektor haben sich die Partner von einst in schwer auflosbare Gegenpositionen manovriert. Den Rundfunkanstalten sind durch die Rechtsauf- sicht des Staates die Hande gebunden, den Hochschulen fehlt es an den not- wendigen Mitteln und an Personal, aber auch an Einigkeit untereinander. Die staatliche Seite schlieBlich ist von sich aus initiativ geworden. Das Land Nordrhein-Westfalen hat eine Fernuniversitat errichtet, deren GrUndungskon- zept aber weder eine Offnung der Hochschulen, noch einen Beitrag zur Stu- 1 dienreform vorsieht. ) Daneben gibt es ein von allen Bundeslandern geschlos- senes Verwaltungsabkommen mit dem Ziel, in einigen ausgewahlten Fachern die Entwicklung von Fernstudienmaterialien voranzutreiben.

A photographic reprint of the rare edition,first published in 1912, of the `Fulda Sacramentary' (Gottingen, UB, Cod. theol. 231), a 10th-century manuscript written at Fulda which represents a distinct recension of the Gregorian Sacramentary, possibly connected with the scholarly activities of Hrabanus Maurus (d.856). The Fulda Sacramentary was richly illuminated; it is also a rich repository of prayers and mass formulas, and its ample contents include aprayer in Old High German.

In 2009 the Seventh International Conference of Manichaean Studies was held at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin. Recognizing the railroad's importance as both symbol and experience in Victorian America, Amy G. Richter follows women travelers onto trains and considers the consequences of their presence there. For a time, Richter argues, nineteenth-century Americans imagined the public realm as a chaotic and dangerous place full of potential, where various groups came together, collided, and influenced one another, for better or worse. The example of the American railroad reveals how, by the beginning of the twentieth century, this image was replaced by one of a domesticated public realm - a public space in which both women and men increasingly strove to make themselves ""at home."" Through efforts that ranged from the homey touches of railroad car decor to advertising images celebrating female travelers and legal cases sanctioning gender-segregated spaces, travelers and railroad companies transformed the railroad from a place of risk and almost unlimited social mixing into one in which white men and women alleviated the stress of unpleasant social contact. Making themselves ""at home"" aboard the trains, white men and women domesticated the railroad for themselves and paved the way for a racially segregated and class-stratified public space that freed women from the home yet still preserved the railroad as a masculine domain.
