This book serves two purposes. The authors present important
aspects of modern research on the mathematical structure of
Einstein's field equations and they show how to extract their
physical content from them by mathematically exact methods. The
essays are devoted to exact solutions and to the Cauchy problem of
the field equations as well as to post-Newtonian approximations
that have direct physical implications. Further topics concern
quantum gravity and optics in gravitational fields.
The book addresses researchers in relativity and differential
geometry but can also be used as additional reading material for
graduate students.
This book describes the full range of possible strategies for
laterally aligning self-assembled quantum dots on a substrate
surface, beginning with pure self-ordering mechanisms and
culminating with forced alignment by lithographic positioning. The
text addresses both short- and long-range ordering phenomena and
introduces future high integration of single quantum dot devices on
a single chip. Contributions by well-known experts ensure that all
relevant quantum-dot heterostructures are elucidated from diverse
perspectives.
Virtual Communion: Theology of the Internet and the Catholic
Sacramental Imagination provides a theological account of the
internet from a Catholic perspective. It engages digital culture by
providing a context for media and mediation within the Catholic
tradition, specifically focusing on the ecclesiology and
sacramentality of the church. Katherine G. Schmidt argues that the
Catholic imagination is inherently consonant with the idea of the
"virtual," understood as the creative space between presence and
absence, bringing the fields of media studies, internet studies,
sociology, history, and theology together in order to give a
theological account of the social realities of American Catholicism
in light of digital culture. Overall, Schmidt argues that the
social possibilities of the internet afford the church great
opportunity for building a social context that allows the living
out of Eucharistic logic learned in properly liturgical moments.
Common Heritage or Common Burden? contains a comprehensive and
authoritative assessment of the US role in the negotiations on the
UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and particularly in the
negotiations on one of the remaining commons, the ocean floor
beyond national jurisdiction. The author first examines the US view
of the lawfulness of deep seabed mining under international law. He
reviews the bureaucratic struggles, within the US Administration
and the Congress, concerning the options to be pursued at the
Conference; analyses the US position in the seabed negotiations
from 1974 to 1980; and casts a fresh look both on the Reagan
Administration's `policy review' of 1981-1982 which threatened the
Conference's outcome, and current US oceans policy which remains an
impediment to the Convention's early entry into force. The study
suggests that despite significant compromises negotiated between
the US and developing countries at the Conference up to 1980, the
emerging seabed regime was not as widely endorsed by US officials
as is generally assumed. Drawing on material collected from
interviews with many key negotiators, the study contributes to a
better understanding of domestic and international decision-making
procedures and the dynamics of international negotiations.

This book expounds the theory of non-linear vibrations, a topic of
great interest at present because of its many applications to
important fields in physics and engineering. After introducing
chapters giving the basic techniques for the study of non-linear
systems the authors develop in detail the theory of selected topics
encountered in their own work, presenting original material,
approaches and results of analysis, and providing illustrations of
useful applications.
Primary care medicine is the new frontier in medicine. Every nation
in the world has recognized the necessity to deliver personal and
primary care to its people. This includes first-contact care, care
based in a positive and caring personal rela tionship, care by a
single healthcare provider for the majority of the patient's prob
lems, coordination of all care by the patient's personal provider,
advocacy for the patient by the provider, the provision of
preventive care and psychosocial care, as well as care for episodes
of acute and chronic illness. These facets of care work most
effectively when they are embedded in a coherent integrated
approach. The support for primary care derives from several
significant trends. First, technologically based care costs have
rocketed beyond reason or availability, occurring in the face of
exploding populations and diminishing real resources in many parts
of the world, even in the wealthier nations. Simultaneously, the
primary care disciplines-general internal medicine and pediatrics
and family medicine-have matured significantly. They have become
viable alternatives to the specialty approach to care with its
potential dehumanization, coordination problems, and increased
cost."

Accurate positioning of self-organized nanostructures on a
substrate surface can be regarded as the Achilles heel of
nanotechnology. This perception also applies to self-assembled
semiconductor quantum dots. This book describes the full range of
possible strategies to laterally align self-assembled quantum dots
on a substrate surface, starting from pure self-ordering mechanisms
and culminating with forced alignment by lithographic positioning.

Karls- ruhe begonnene, wissenschaftliche Veranstaltungsreihe fort,
From October 1964 to May 1969 the 40 MHz, 41 MHz, and 360 MHz
signals of the satellite Explo 0 0 rer 22, were recorded at Lindau
(51,650 N; 10,125 E). The Faraday effect recordings at 40 MHz and
41 MHz and Dispersive-Doppler-effect recordings at 40 MHz and 360
MHz were used to calculate the ionospheric electron content up to
1000 km. The mean electron content for 1 hour periods over a period
0 of three months as obtained at 51. 6 N geographic latitude as
derived from various evaluation methods is presented. Furthermore,
the relevant critical frequency FOF2 is displayed. A similar
presentation was chosen for the calculated slabthickness data. For
one specific case the daily variation of the electron con tent as
determined by measurements was compared with a relevant theoretical
curve. The agreement, was fairly good. Due to technical problems
the beacons were switched off in 1969. Now the five orbiting
FS-NNSS satellites provide a good possibility to determine the
ionospheric electron content up to 1100 km fairly accurately by
evaluating the Dispersive Doppler recordings obtained at 150 MHz
and 400 MHz. The amplitude recordings of the 40 MHz and 41 MHz
signals of Explorer 22 were furthermore used for amplitude
scintillation studies. Simultaneous Dispersive-Doppler-recordings
enabled in part also pha se scintillation studies. Phase and
amplitude recordings were compared."
This text offers a concise and comprehensive overview of the Federal Republic of Germany post 1945. The chapters will enable students to understand how Germany's political institutions work, their strengths and weaknesses and the relationship between institutions and the political process.
This practical introduction focuses on how to build integrated
solutions to industrial vision problems from individual algorithms.
It gives a hands-on guide for setting up automated visual
inspection systems using real-world examples and the NeuroCheck
software package, included on CD-ROM.
NATO - The First 50 Years offers the first comprehensive study of
the institution's activities and development over the past five
decades. Written by a team of international scholars, it analyses
the factors which have made NATO the most successful
politico-military alliance in history. It also addresses the
perennial problems of transatlantic relationships, the problems
that the Alliance grapples with today. A wide-ranging and masterful
survey, NATO-The First 50 Years will be a useful reference work for
researchers as well as an accessible guide for students.
First published thirty years ago, the long-awaited second edition
of "Growing California Native Plants" is the ideal hands-on native
plant guide for both experienced and novice gardeners. In addition
to the voluminous knowledge contributed by Marjorie G. Schmidt, now
deceased, Katherine L. Greenberg has taken note of the vibrant
state of today's horticultural scene, adding plants and ideas that
were little known when the book first appeared. Lavishly
illustrated with 200 new color photographs, drawings, maps, and
charts, this concise and easy-to-use reference covers trees,
shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs, grasses, and vines, and
includes a plant selection guide for quick reference. The authors,
whose combined experience spans six decades, take California's
summer-dry climate and restricted water supplies into account and
provide helpful notes on companion plants and gardening with
wildlife. Practical and informative, "Growing California Native
Plants" is a valuable reference for gardeners everywhere in
California and an enjoyable book simply to explore.
Betablockem, Kalziumantagonisten, Nitra- ten, Aggregationshemmem,
Mittelpunkt seiner therapeutischen Uberlegun- gen stehen soUte.
