Among the Thorns is a sometimes autobiographical series of poems of lives shaped out of sight, of individuals growing everywhere but in the fertile soil of the mainstream, always just a bit off, always within sight of "normal" but unable to attain that elusive illusion of comfort.
The illusion of certainty in faith may be the last un-named sin, the lack of it the stuff of poetry, the struggle to know, to feel, to believe, a wholly holy pursuit ... even by those brave enough to admit we do not know, only try.
This book provides a unique and up-to-date insight into the biopharmaceutical industry. Largely written by industrial authors, its scope is multidisciplinary, rendering it an ideal reference source for students undertaking advanced undergraduate or postgraduate courses in biotechnology, pharmaceutical science, biochemistry, or medicine.
When I started working on these poems, it was because I wanted to put a few in a folder as a surprise gift for my son, who was coming to visit me from Italy. He was visibly moved when he read them, so I knew I was on the right track. After he was stricken with ALS, I decided maybe I could put together a book of poems in his memory. I hope they are enjoyed by all.
Judas Iscariot, known for his betrayal of Jesus, is a key figure in the Gospel narratives. As an insider become outsider, Judas demarcates Christian boundaries of good and evil. 'Three Versions of Judas' examines the role of Judas in Christian myth-making. The book draws on Jorge Luis Borges' "Three Versions of Judas" to present three Judases in the Gospels: a Judas necessary to the divine plan; a Judas who is a determined outsider, denying himself for God's glory; and a Judas who is demonic. Exploring the findings of biblical criticism and artistic responses to Judas, 'Three Versions of Judas' offers an analysis of the evil necessarily inherent in Christian narratives about Judas.

How I wept at your hymns and songs, keenly moved by the sweet-sounding voices of your church wrote the recently converted Augustine in his "Confessions." Christians from the earliest period consecrated the hours of the day and the sacred calendar, liturgical seasons and festivals of saints. This volume collects one hundred of the most important and beloved Late Antique and Medieval Latin hymns from Western Europe. These religious voices span a geographical range that stretches from Ireland through France to Spain and Italy. They meditate on the ineffable, from Passion to Paradise, in love and trembling and praise. The authors represented here range from Ambrose in the late fourth century ce down to Bonaventure in the thirteenth. The texts cover a broad gamut in their poetic forms and meters. Although often the music has not survived, most of them would have been sung. Some of them have continued to inspire composers, such as the great thirteenth-century hymns, the "Stabat mater "and "Dies irae.""
Pharmaceutical Biotechnology offers students taking Pharmacy and related Medical and Pharmaceutical courses a comprehensive introduction to the fast-moving area of biopharmaceuticals. With a particular focus on the subject taken from a pharmaceutical perspective, initial chapters offer a broad introduction to protein science and recombinant DNA technology- key areas that underpin the whole subject. Subsequent chapters focus upon the development, production and analysis of these substances. Finally the book moves on to explore the science, biotechnology and medical applications of specific biotech products categories. These include not only protein-based substances but also nucleic acid and cell-based products. * introduces essential principles underlining modern biotechnology- recombinant DNA technology and protein science* an invaluable introduction to this fast-moving subject aimed specifically at pharmacy and medical students* includes specific 'product category chapters' focusing on the pharmaceutical, medical and therapeutic properties of numerous biopharmaceutical products.* entire chapter devoted to the principles of genetic engineering and how these drugs are developed.* includes numerous relevant case studies to enhance student understanding* no prior knowledge of protein structure is assumed
The Summa Theologiae ranks among the greatest documents of the Christian Church, and is a landmark of medieval western thought. It provides the framework for Catholic studies in systematic theology and for a classical Christian philosophy, and is regularly consulted by scholars of all faiths and none, across a range of academic disciplines. This paperback reissue of the classic Latin/English edition first published by the English Dominicans in the 1960s and 1970s, in the wake of the Second Vatican Council, has been undertaken in response to regular requests from readers and librarians around the world for the entire series of 61 volumes to be made available again. The original text is unchanged, except for the correction of a small number of typographical errors.
