The Routledge History of Philosophy series provides a chronological
survey of the history of Western Philosophy fro its beginnings in
the sixth century BC to the present time. It discusses all the
major philosophical developments in depth, and covers all those
regarded as great philosophers and many lesser figures of
philosophypast and present. We are pleased to announce all 10
volumes are now available in paperback for the first time.
This volume covers a period of three hundred and fifty years, from the middle of the fourteenth century to the early years of the eighteenth century: the birth of modern philosophy.
First published in 1977, Georg Lukacs gives an outline of Lukacs'
views and explains how they are related to the relevant cultural
traditions of his epoch. The author covers the whole range of
Lukacs' thought, from his earliest literary criticism to the
posthumous Ontology of Social Existence. Lukacs' early writings in
particular are frequently obscure in style and impregnated with the
language and thought of Hegel. Professor Parkinson has elucidated
Lukacs' principal writings in systematic fashion, and the book
includes a detailed exposition of Lukacs' influential but difficult
book History and Class Consciousness. This should be an
indispensable book for all those who seek a clear, comprehensible
introduction to the writings of one of the most influential Marxist
thinkers of our time.

This fourth volume traces the history of Renaissance philosophy and
seventeenth century rationalism, covering Descartes and the birth
of modern philosophy.
Spinoza's Ethics is a classic philosophy text but it is also one of the most difficult to understand. This latest text in the Oxford Philosophical Texts series includes a new, lucid translation of Ethics in which Parkinson provides a comprehensive guide to the understanding of Spinoza's work. An extensive introduction includes a short biography of Spinoza himself; the form of his writing including his own particular uses of definitions; an introductory guide through the philosophy of Ethics; and a summary of the contents of Ethics itself. Further aids include a glossary of terms, notes to the text, and notes to the translation.
The papers in this volume, first published in 1982, deal with a
number of different aspects of Marx's ideas and the varying
constructions put on them by later Marxists. Based on a lecture
series, they examine Marxist views of the nature of philosophy, of
history and historical explanation, the role and importance of
politics, and of literature and the place of ethics. Among the
Marxists considered are Lukacs, Sartre, Habermas, Althusser and
Macherey. A continuous concern through the volume is the relation
within Marxist thought of fact and value, with the implications
that will have for our actions.
