publication of Jackson's settings of the seven 'O' antiphons under
the title Seven Advent Antiphons, O Virgo virginum is a setting of
the Latin text recognised as the eighth 'O' antiphon and performed
as such in many Christian traditions. Jackson's imaginative setting
features a melismatic line for tenor soloist and aleatoric writing.
for SATB unaccompanied The text for this imaginative and effective
piece by Gabriel Jackson is a response to Allen Ginsberg's A
Supermarket in California by Latvian poet Karlis Verdins,
translated here by Ieva Lesinska. As in Ginsberg's poem, the
initial setting is a supermarket, depicted with vivid imagery such
as 'a weary, shrivelled apple', before the angel protagonist
expounds on their observations about contemporary society.
Pleasingly alliterative lines such as 'he'd babble boozily about
tanks' are artfully given rhythmic emphasis by Jackson, who fully
exploits the dramatic intent of the poem, giving space for the text
to come through by homophonic setting, a pure harmonic language,
and often sparse textures.
for SATB soloists or choir unaccompanied This powerful work is a
sequence of meditations on loss and longing, of fear and of hope,
by turns contemplative and dramatic. The narrative is made up of a
selection of poems by four exiled Latvian writers from the group
known as the Hell's Kitchen Poets and present-day displaced persons
from Palestine and Syria. The text is in Latvian and English, and a
pronunciation guide for the Latvian text is included in the vocal
score. Jackson also employs percussion for dramatic effect, with
three singers required to play brake drum, railway man's whistle,
and claves. With all of the trademarks of Jackson's compelling
musical style, this piece will be an exciting challenge for choirs
looking to explore universal themes.
for SATB and organ Commissioned by The Maryland State Boychoir in
2017, this striking Christmas piece sets a famous text by Ben
Jonson. Jackson's attractive and largely diatonic harmonies combine
with vivid word-setting, deft manipulations of texture, and a
colourful organ part to create a mood of gentle rapture, with a
central section that explores more conflicted atmospheres.
for SSSSAATTBB unaccompanied Commissioned by The Marian Consort in
celebration of their 10th anniversary, and first performed in 2018,
Jackson's is one of the most striking modern settings of this
ancient text. With a rich scoring matching that of Scarlatti's
setting of the same text, the composer's trademark diversity of
texture is much in evidence. Passages of rich sonority give way to
intimate soloistic sections, the lines spiced up by fiery rhythms
and occasional arabesques and glissandi. The piece will be a very
satisfying challenge for a proficient choir.

John Boyle O'Reilly. Jackson combines lyrical polyphonic phrases

choir, frequently accompanied by repeated half-whispered text in
free time.

Vision of Light sets early Christian texts by St Augustine of

Cathedral Girls' Choir, this setting of the well-known All Saints
Day text juxtaposes flowing melodic lines in the sopranos with rich
homophonic passages, each bringing the text to the fore. The organ
plays a prominent role, providing gentle undulating accompaniment,
as well as fanfare-like exclamations.
for SSAATTBB unaccompanied Ave gloriosa mater salvatoris is a
challenging and yet delicate anthem, with subtle key-signature
changes, vocal divisions in up to eight parts, and alternating
homophonic and polyphonic passages. The text includes excerpts from
the synonymous medieval hymn and Wordsworth's poem The Virgin,
making the piece suitable for a variety of sacred celebrations and
particularly those of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, To the Field of Stars
features a variety of texts on the nature of travel and worship.
Underpinned by evocative cello and percussion lines, Jackson's
strong choral writing offers fragments of spoken lines and
unexpected melodic twists, while a refrain recurs in a new musical
guise after each movement. The piece reaches its climax in the
sixth movement when quiet, freely repeated choral notes ring out
against cello and crotales, creating a musical 'field of stars'.
Mysterious and beautiful, this piece offers an immensely rewarding
challenge for choirs. Percussion and cello parts are available on

for SATB (with divisions) and soprano saxophone Setting the
original Latin text of the hymn better known as 'Hark! a thrilling
voice is sounding', Jackson creates an Advent piece of beautiful
stillness. The largely homophonic choral parts, with a soloist
supplying a gentle contrapuntal line, are contrasted with light and
graceful interjections from the saxophone. The result is a quietly
moving piece ideally suited for a reflective moment during an
Advent service.
for SSATB and organ This attractive and uplifting anthem sets the
text of the Eastertide Vidi aquam antiphon. Different parts of the
text are treated to contrasting musical ideas, including extended
melismatic upper-voice passages and mainly homophonic full-choir

structured in five continuous movements, with a tenor soloist
joining the choir in the second, fourth (where they have a
melismatic extended solo passage), and fifth. Profound words by
Wallace Stevens-'How high that highest candle lights the dark. Out
of this same light, out of the central mind, We make a dwelling in
the evening air, In which being there together is enough.'-draw
this monumental work to a close, with wind and strings leading us
to a final chord that resounds with quiet, hopeful optimism at the
end of this transformative musical experience.
