The Anthropocene concept draws attention to the various forms of entanglement of social, political, ecological, biological and geological processes at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The ensuing complexity and ambiguity create manifold challenges to widely established theories, methodologies, epistemologies and ontologies. The contributions to this volume engage with conceptual issues of scale in the Anthropocene with a focus on mediated representation and narrative. They are centered around the themes of scale and time, scale and the nonhuman and scale and space. The volume presents an interdisciplinary dialogue between sociology, geography, political sciences, history and literary, cultural and media studies. Together, they contribute to current debates on the (re-)imagining of forms of human responsibility that meet the challenges created by humanity entering an age of scalar complexity. Looking by turns at the history of concepts, knowledge and scholarly practice in the 18th century, the study traces the changes undergone in the course of the first half of that period by ideas on imagination as an intermediary faculty between the bodily and the spiritual. Whereas the early Enlightenment regarded imagination as a 'lower faculty' subordinate to the logic of reason, the rehabilitation of sensual perception brought with it a massive reinstatement of imagination as a 'way of knowing'. In the course of this process, it gained central status as a case in point for the investigation of interrelations between psychic and physiological processes representing a major challenge for philosophers and medical scholars alike. By contrast, poetics and aesthetics advocated formal education in aesthetic and sensual perception as a way of channelling and curbing potential extravagances in the use of the imaginative faculty.

The South Seas play a major part in 19th century German literature and journalism, where they figure as a paradise representing the object of desire, research, and colonial conquest. This book demonstrates that literature on the South Seas displays an almost uniform repertory of exoticizing and fear-mongering stereotypes of the foreigner and things foreign that served various different purposes (esthetic standards, political aims, popularization of science). With reference to travel journals, magazine articles, adventure novels, and memoirs, the studya (TM)s focus on textual analysis and the history of discourse accentuates the shifts taking place within the heterogeneous discourse on Oceania.

Der erste Teil bietet einen UEberblick uber den Wissensstand und die aktuellen Debatten in den Environmental Humanities auf beiden Seiten des Rheins. Der zweite Teil enthalt entsprechende Fallstudien mit dem Fokus auf die Pflanzenwelt, d.h. auf Garten und Walder. Cet ouvrage propose une reflexion sur la construction et la diffusion des savoirs sur la nature et l'environnement en France et en Allemagne, en associant le dialogue des disciplines et des echelles. La premiere partie offre un etat des savoirs et des debats sur les Humanites environnementales des deux cotes du Rhin. La deuxieme partie aborde des etudes de cas autour de deux thematiques axees sur le vegetal: les jardins et les forets.

In den letzten Jahren beginnt die Debatte um ein 'New Nature Writing' auch im deutschsprachigen Literaturbetrieb Fuss zu fassen. Lasst sich die aus einer langen angelsachsischen Literaturtradition (White; Thoreau) stammende Kategorie 'Nature Writing' im deutschsprachigen Raum uber die Gegenwartsliteratur hinaus auch fur die Literaturgeschichte produktiv machen? Welche transnationalen Verbindungen gibt es, in welchem Verhaltnis steht das Nature Writing zur Tradition der Naturlyrik und weiteren literarischen Gattungen? Warum hat sich in der Germanistik das Nature Writing als Kategorie bislang kaum etablieren koennen? Ware eine neue, eigene Benennung nicht sinnvoller? Mit diesen und weiteren Fragen setzen sich international anerkannte Literaturwissenschaftler*innen in Beitragen u.a. zu Brockes, Goethe, Novalis, Hoelderlin, A. v. Humboldt, Stifter, Fontane, Lehmann, Kolmar, Kafka, Sebald, Handke und Kinsky kritisch auseinander und zeigen Kontroversen und neue Perspektiven auf.
