Despite growing interest in the Baha'is of Iran, research on the history of this often-persecuted minority community has been limited by the availability of sources. 'The Baha'is of Iran, Transcaspia and the Caucasus' will help to fill this gap by assembling for the first time original material from Russian archives. Volume 1 of this set showcases letters from the Rozen collection, including those of diplomats, army officers and scholars, candidly revealing the Russian perspective on developments concerning the Baha'is in Iran and Russia. In addition to the complete texts in their original languages, the authors provide both annotated translations and analytical introductions which supply essential background information, thus making this book an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Babi and Baha'i history, the history of religion and minorities, Russo-Persian relations or Qajar Iran.

Aristotle's Theory of Material Substance - Heat and Pneuma, Form and Soul (Hardcover): Gad Freudenthal Aristotle's Theory of Material Substance - Heat and Pneuma, Form and Soul (Hardcover)
Gad Freudenthal
R3,921 Discovery Miles 39 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers an original account of one of Aristotle's central doctrines, his theory of material substance. Gad Freudenthal argues that Aristotle's concept of heat is a crucial but hitherto ignored part of this account. Aristotle's 'canonical', four-element theory of matter fails to explain the coming-to-be of material substances (the way matter becomes organised) and their persistence (why substances do not disintegrate into their components). Interpreters have highlighted Aristotle's claim that soul is the active cause of the coming-to-be and persistence of living beings. Dr Freudenthal draws on dispersed remarks in Aristotle's writings, to argue that Aristotle in parallel also draws on a comprehensive 'naturalistic' theory, which accounts for material persistence through the concepts of heat, specifically vital heat, and connate pneuma. This theory, which bears also on the higher soul-functions, is central in Aristotle's understanding of the relationship between matter and form, body and soul. Dr Freudenthal aims not only to recover this theory and to highlight its explanatory roles, but also to make suggestions concerning its origin in Presocratic thought and in Aristotle's own early theology. He further offers a brief review of how later ages came to grips with the difficulties inherent in the received version of Aristotle's matter theory. This book is an important contribution to the proper understanding of a central Aristotelian doctrine, which straddles 'chemistry', biology, the theory of soul, and metaphysics.

R696 Discovery Miles 6 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Only God knows. We may ponder and choose our own path to receiving His Word, but we must realize ours is a human path. We cannot let blind faith, tradition, and ritual cloud our judgment and determine our perception of the world. The potent mix of fanaticism (whether tied to a nation or a religion), ignorance, and emotion has driven wedges among the peoples of the earth-wedges that need not exist at all. "In Search of God: God, Religious Scriptures, and Proof of Divine Revelation" presents the result of author Dr. Mohamed Gad's twenty-five-year study of Christian, Islamic, and Judaic scripture, revealing the unifying truths of divinity, belief, and faith."In Search of God" challenges serious students of all faiths and backgrounds as it examines proof for the existence of God, creation and evolution, prophecy, the identity of Jesus, the concept of the Holy Trinity, and the commonalities and spirit of revelation of the world's three major religions. Dr. Gad's personal journey and critical, spiritual investigation personify the human desire to understand God's intention for us. Yes, only God knows, but armed with truth and tolerance we now have a chance to create a brighter future for our children and ourselves, a future in which we seek God, trust in Him, and are at peace.

John Carr, Gad Loebenstein
R3,908 Discovery Miles 39 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Viruses are a huge threat to agriculture. In the past, viruses used to be controlled using conventional methods, such as crop rotation and destruction of the infected plants, but now there are more novel ways to control them. This volume focuses on topics that must be better understood in order to foster future developments in basic and applied plant virology. These range from virus epidemiology and virus/host co-evolution and the control of vector-mediated transmission through to systems biology investigations of virus-cell interactions. Other chapters cover the current status of signalling in natural resistance and the potential for a revival in the use of cross-protection, as well as future opportunities for the deployment of the under-utilized but highly effective crop protection strategy of pathogen-derived resistance.

The Sweetpotato (Hardcover): Gad Loebenstein, George Thottappilly The Sweetpotato (Hardcover)
Gad Loebenstein, George Thottappilly
R5,258 Discovery Miles 52 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the last four decades of the twentieth century the use of sweetpotato was diversified beyond their classification as subsistence, food security, and famine-relief crop. In developing countries they serve both as human food and for feeding livestock. In Western countries they appeal to health conscious consumers because of their nutritional aspects. The sweetpotato is very high in nutritive value, and merits wider use on this account alone. The book has 2 parts. A general one giving up-to-date information on the history, botany, cultivars, genetic engineering, propagation, diseases and pests, nutritional data and marketing; and a second part presenting data on sweetpotato growing practices in different areas of the world. The information should be useful to researchers, practitioners and crop administrators in different countries.

The inspiration for this text was the 1988 volume by Alder and Zbinden, written before the ICH harmonization process for drug safety evaluation (or its ISO analog for device biocompatibility evaluation) had been initiated or come to force. Since then, much has changed in both the world and practice of medicine and the regulation of drugs. The intent of this volume is to provide similar guidance as to what nonclinical safety assessment tests need to be performed to move a drug into man, through development and to market approved (this intent was subsequently extended to cover the closely related medical device biotechnology, and combination product fields) in a concise, abbreviated manner for all the major world market countries.

The Journey From Essen (Hardcover): Gad Meiry The Journey From Essen (Hardcover)
Gad Meiry
R886 Discovery Miles 8 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

I wrote this book to tell an important story about a boy from a wealthy Jewish family who escaped and survive Nazi Germany. His parents and his sister were killed outside the Lodge concentration camp in 1941. The book begins with the history of the grandparents and the parents to the time when the boy found himself with other boys. They saw their parents quickly fading in the distance as the locomotive started to pull them into an unknown journey. The boy's father was wealthy enough to secure for Hans, a place with the Kinder-Transport. By train and boat the boys arrived in England were they were received by families who had volunteered to bring these 'refuge children' into their homes. Hans was fortunate enough to be assigned to an affluent family, who lived near London. After several months Hans was informed that there had been a conversation about adoption between his host and his father. He opted to go to school on his own and eventually make his way to Palestine. After attending classes at several locations, Hans and some of his friends were located to Chester. That is were he found himself when World War II broke out. Two weeks before his graduation, he and all his friends were shipped to a farm in Lancashire were they were taught farming in preparation for Kibbutz-life in Palestine. The last stop for Hans was in Kindersley, Shropshire where Hans had a very successful career as a dairy-man. But when the group of boys and girls had to register as 'Friendly German Enemy Aliens', Hans and several others opted to volunteer for the 'JEWISH BRIGADE'. It was because of his service with the Brigade that Hans would find a way to fulfill his dream to go to Palestine.
