Diseases of Wild Waterfowl (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Gary A. Wobeser Diseases of Wild Waterfowl (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Gary A. Wobeser
R2,574 Discovery Miles 25 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This second edition of the only reference devoted to diseases of wild waterfowl has been completely revised to include several new viral agents and toxins. The entire text reflects an increased emphasis on the relationships among habitat, management, and the occurrence of disease. Chapter format is consistent throughout, with the cause ecology, clinical and pathologic features, diagnostic techniques, significance, and remedial management of each disease described. Among the highlights are a chapter on diagnostic techniques (which includes the necropsy procedure) and an extensive reference list.

Disease in Wild Animals - Investigation and Management (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2007): Gary A. Wobeser Disease in Wild Animals - Investigation and Management (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2007)
Gary A. Wobeser
R8,665 Discovery Miles 86 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gary Wobeser's successful book from 1994 has been completely updated and enlarged in a new second edition. An in-depth overview of the available techniques for the investigation and management of disease in free-ranging animals is provided. The subjects are illustrated with examples drawn from around the world, with emphasis on the special requirements involved in working with wild animals. The book draws on the author 's training as a wildlife biologist.

Infectious Disease Ecology and Conservation (Paperback): Johannes Foufopoulos, Gary A. Wobeser, Hamish Mccallum Infectious Disease Ecology and Conservation (Paperback)

R1,433 Discovery Miles 14 330 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Emerging infectious diseases pose an increasingly serious threat to a number of endangered or sensitive species and are increasingly recognized as one of the major factors driving species extinction. Despite the significant impact of pathogens on conservation, no single book has yet integrated the theoretical principles underlying disease transmission with the practical health considerations for helping wildlife professionals and conservation biologists to manage disease outbreaks and conserve biodiversity. This novel and accessible book starts with a foundational section focusing on the role of pathogens in natural ecosystems, the dynamics of transmission in different environments, and the factors driving wildlife disease outbreaks. It then moves on to more applied issues concerned with the acquisition of field data including sampling, experimental design and analysis, as well as diagnostic analyses in both the laboratory and field. Guidelines for effective modelling and data analysis follow, before a final section is devoted to disease prevention and control including the prevention of novel outbreaks, the use of diseases as biocontrol agents, and the associated issues of ethics, public communication, and outreach. Infectious Disease Ecology and Conservation is primarily aimed at advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and established researchers in the fields of conservation biology, disease ecology, population ecology, and veterinary science. It will also be a valuable reference for conservation practitioners, land managers, and wildlife professionals who are required to deal with disease outbreak problems.

Management of wild waterfowl has become increasingly intensive. Many birds now hatch in managed nesting cover or in artificial nesting structures, use man-made wetlands, and winter on crowded refuges while consuming a grain diet The water they use is often limited in supply and may contain residues from its many prior users. Unfortunately, intensified management often results in new problems, among which disease is important There are many similarities between the current form of management used for some waterfowl and that used in domestic animals. In both, the objective is to maintain a healthy, productive population. Dealing with health problems in waterfowl will benefit from combining the skills of veterinary medicine and wildlife ecology. Revisiting this book after 15 years allowed me to consider changes at the interface between the two disciplines. Veterinary medicine traditionally has been concerned with the individual and with treating sick animals, while the ecologist is concerned with populations and the manager has limited interest in treating sick birds. During this period there has been a marked increase in awareness among veterinarians that they have a responsibility in wildlife and conservation biology. Curricula of many veterinary colleges now include material on non-domestic animals and attempt to put disease in an ecological context. Also during this time, waterfowl managers have become more aware of disease as a factor in population biology and there are early attempts to put numbers to "disease" in models of continental waterfowl populations.
