J. Gary Taylor, Patricia J. Scharlin
R1,892 Discovery Miles 18 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A profit-driven multinational corporation and an upstart group of environmentalists surprise the world and forge an astonishingly successful partnership Large and wealthy global companies too often fail to acknowledge environmental responsibility or workers' rights. This book tells the dramatic story of one company-Chiquita Brands International-that decided to change the negative paradigm. Formerly the notorious United Fruit Company, a paternalistic organization that gave the name "Banana Republic" to tropical countries in Central America, Chiquita defied all expectations in the mid-1990s by forming an innovative pact with the Rainforest Alliance that transformed not only the corporation itself but also an important segment of the banana industry. Gary Taylor and Patricia Scharlin reveal the inside story of how corporate executives, banana workers, local leaders, and conservation advocates learned to work together and trust one another. Over the objections of skeptical critics, Chiquita and the Rainforest Alliance established a Better Banana "seal of approval" to certify genuine efforts to improve soil and water quality, ensure rainforest conservation, and enhance worker health and safety. This chronicle of their collaboration, told objectively and with extensive documentation, presents a promising new model of cooperative behavior--a model that shows how multinational companies can become motivated to solve critical global problems.

The Oxford Shakespeare: Henry V (Hardcover): William Shakespeare The Oxford Shakespeare: Henry V (Hardcover)
William Shakespeare; Edited by Gary Taylor
R1,731 Discovery Miles 17 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Henry V, the climax of Shakespeare's sequence of English history plays, is an inspiring, often comic celebration of a young warrior-king. But it is also a study of the costly exhilarations of war, and of the penalties as well as the glories of human greatness. Introducing this brilliantly innovative edition, Gary Taylor shows how Shakespeare shaped his historical material, examines controversial critical interpretations, discusses the play's fluctuating fortunes in performance, and analyses the range and variety of Shakespeare's characterization. The first Folio text is radically rethought, making original use of the First Quarto (1600).

The Oxford Handbook of Thomas Middleton (Hardcover, New): Gary Taylor, Trish Thomas Henley The Oxford Handbook of Thomas Middleton (Hardcover, New)
Gary Taylor, Trish Thomas Henley
R3,988 Discovery Miles 39 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 37 essays in The Oxford Handbook of Thomas Middleton reinterpret the English Renaissance through the lens of one of its most original, and least understood, geniuses. Shakespeare's younger contemporary and collaborator, Middleton wrote modern comedies, tragedies, tragicomedies, history plays, masques, pageants, pamphlets, and poetry. The largest collection of new Middleton criticism ever assembled, this ambitious Handbook provides a comprehensive, in-depth, cutting-edge reaction to OUP's Collected Works of Thomas Middleton, winner of the 2009 MLA prize for editing, the first complete scholarly text of his voluminous and diverse oeuvre. The Handbook brings together an international, cross-generational team of experts to discuss all these genres through an equally diverse range of critical approaches, from feminism to stylistics, ecocriticism to performance studies, Aristotle to Zizek. Reinterpretations of canonical plays such as The Changeling, Women Beware Women, The Roaring Girl, and A Chaste Maid in Cheapside mingle with explorations of neglected or recently-identified works. Middleton's dramatic use of dance, music, and clothing, Middletonian adaptation, his relationships to the classical world and to continental Europe, his fascinating explorations of sexuality and religion, all receive attention. The collection also provides new essays on modern and postmodern reactions to Middleton, including recent Middleton revivals and films, and living artists' responses to his work-responses that range from the actresses who play Middleton's women to writers in various genres who have been inspired by his artistry. The Handbook establishes an authoritative foundation for the rapidly-expanding growth of interest in this extraordinarily protean, funny, moving, disturbing, and modern writer.

Castration - An Abbreviated History of Western Manhood (Paperback, New Ed): Gary Taylor Castration - An Abbreviated History of Western Manhood (Paperback, New Ed)
Gary Taylor
R1,243 Discovery Miles 12 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Stone Age man invented it, the Sumerians exalted it, the Christians banned it, and Freud got it wrong. Over the last century, castration has meant loss of manhood. But at earlier points in Western history, Gary Taylor argues, it was a mark of power and divinity. Castration is a lively history of the meaning, function, and act of castration from its place in the early church to its secular reinvention in the Renaissance, as a spiritualized form of masculinity to its 20th century position at the core of psychoanalysis.

Gary Taylor
R4,510 Discovery Miles 45 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Stone Age man invented it, the Sumerians exalted it, the Christians banned it, and Freud got it wrong. Over the last century, castration has meant a loss of manhood. But at earlier points in history, Gary Taylor argues, it was a mark of power and divinity.
In this unique and cutting edge book Gary Taylor looks at the West's fascination with, and misunderstanding of, castrated males and takes in the sweep of Western thought on 'the operation', focusing on three key periods:
* the Early Church, one of whose Fathers, Origen, supposedly castrated himself
* the Early Modern, when castration was actually depicted on stage by Thomas Middleton
* the twentieth century, where, Taylor argues, Freud got it wrong. Very wrong...
Clever, offbeat, and learned, Castration turns an unusual and discomforting topic into a thoroughly enjoyable narrative of man's obsessive relationship to his penis, his sexuality, and his manhood.

The Tamer Tamed; or, the Woman's Prize (Paperback): Celia Daileader, Gary Taylor The Tamer Tamed; or, the Woman's Prize (Paperback)
Celia Daileader, Gary Taylor
R366 Discovery Miles 3 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first edition for students and general readers of this pro-woman reply to Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew' by a playwright (John Fletcher) who was more admired than Shakespeare in the seventeenth century. Co-edited by a feminist critic and a distinguished textual scholar, this new textbook makes clear why "The Tamer Tamed" should be restored to the theatrical repertoire and the literary canon. It includes the fullest commentary ever provided for the play, explaining for modern students Fletcher's verbal exuberance and his uninhibited sexual language. The full critical introduction describes the play's Renaissance context, its historical and literary sources (including Aristophanes's "Lysistrata"), and its subversive relationship to Shakespeare's "Shrew" and Ben Jonson's "The Silent Woman". It also surveys the play's subsequent theatrical and critical history. A unique and essential companion to the numerous textbook editions of Shakespeare's play, "The Tamer Tamed" provides exciting new material for current debates about the history of gender, marriage, and drama. -- .

Work-Related Learning and the Social Sciences (Paperback): Gary Taylor, Liam Mellor, Richard McCarter Work-Related Learning and the Social Sciences (Paperback)
Gary Taylor, Liam Mellor, Richard McCarter
R1,264 Discovery Miles 12 640 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Work-Related Learning and the Social Sciences provides a clear and accessible introduction to the theory and practice of work. Written in a student friendly style, it makes use of the following: Theoretical Perspectives: The theoretical foundations of identity, power, community, citizenship, experiential learning and a range of employability skills provide frameworks for the chapters. Key issues: The book addresses such issues as: How are people socialised at work? Why does conflict occur at work? What types of control are exerted at work? What can we learn about our communities from the work we do? How can we develop our employability skills? Sector examples: Extensive use is made of examples of the working practices of teachers, social workers, police officers, civil servants, third sector workers as well as from people engaged in low skilled work. The student voice: The student voice draws upon the relationship between their own experiences of work and the key issues covered in the book. Written as an introductory text for students studying the social sciences, it deals with the ways in which students can appreciate the sociology and politics of work and develop an understanding of their own skills and employability. This book is particularly relevant to students studying work-related learning as part of their social science degrees and to those who wish to enhance their employability and prospects in graduate level employment.

Discussing intersecting discourses of race, gender and empire in literature, history and contemporary culture, the book begins with the metaphor of 'the other woman' as a repository for the 'otherness' of all women in a masculinist-racist society and shows how discourses of race and sexuality thwart the realization of true inter-racial sisterhood.

Gary Taylor, John Lavagnino
R1,555 Discovery Miles 15 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Thomas Middleton and Early Modern Textual Culture is not only a companion to The Collected Works of Thomas Middleton, which every scholar of Renaissance literature will find indispensable. It is also essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the book in early modern Europe. The book is divided into two parts. The first part, on 'The Culture', situates Middleton within an historical and theoretical overview of early modern textual production, reproduction, circulation, and reception. An introductory essay by Gary Taylor ('The Order of Persons') surveys lists of persons written by or connected to Middleton, using the complex relationship between textual and social orders to trace the evolution of textual culture in England during the 'Middleton century' (1580-1679). Ten original essays then focus on Middleton's connections to different aspects of textual culture in that century: authorship (by MacD. P. Jackson), manuscripts (Harold Love), legal texts (Edward Geiskes), censorship (Richard Burt), printing (Adrian Weiss), visual texts (John Astington), music (Andrew Sabol), stationers and living authors (Cyndia Clegg), posthumous publishing (Maureen Bell), and early readers (John Jowett). The second part, 'The Texts', supplies the documentation for claims made in the first part. This includes detailed evidence for the canon and chronology of Middleton's works in all genres, greatly extending previous scholarship, and using the latest corpus-based attribution techniques. A full editorial apparatus is supplied for each item in The Collected Works: an Introduction, which summarizes and extends previous scholarship, is followed by textual notes, recording substantive departures from the control-text, variants between early texts, press-variants, discussions of emendations, and (for plays) an exact transcription of all original stage directions. Cross-references make it easy to move between the two volumes. This authoritative account of the early texts includes some extraordinarily complicated cases, which have never before been systematically collated: 'Hence, all you vain delights' (the most popular song lyric from the Renaissance stage), The Two Gates of Salvation, The Peacemaker, and A Game at Chess (the most complex editorial problem in early modern drama, with eight extant texts and numerous reports of the early performances).

The Quest for Cardenio - Shakespeare, Fletcher, Cervantes, and the Lost Play (Hardcover): David Carnegie, Gary Taylor The Quest for Cardenio - Shakespeare, Fletcher, Cervantes, and the Lost Play (Hardcover)
David Carnegie, Gary Taylor
R2,512 Discovery Miles 25 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about the search for a lost play. Celebrating the quatercentenary of publication of the first translation of Don Quixote, it is the first collection of essays entirely devoted to The History of Cardenio, a play based on Cervantes and probably written in that same year. It was said to be written by Shakespeare and the young man who was taking his place, John Fletcher, the most successful English playwright of the seventeenth century. The book brings together leading scholars, critics, and theatre practitioners to discuss the lost (or partially lost) play. It also re-examines Lewis Theobald's 1727 Double Falsehood, allegedly based on Cardenio. A range of approaches -new archival evidence, employment of advanced computer-aided stylometric tests for authorship attribution, early modern theatre history, literary and theatrical analysis, musicology, and recent theatrical productions and adaptations - produces new research findings about the play, Shakespeare, Fletcher, Cervantes, and the early modern relationship between Spanish and English culture. The book establishes the dates, venues, and audience for two performances of Cardenio by the King's Men in 1613, and identifies glimpses of the play in several seventeenth-century documents. It also provides much new evidence and analysis of Double Falsehood, which Theobald claimed was based on previously unknown manuscripts of a play by Shakespeare. His enemies, especially Pope, denied the Shakespeare attribution. Debate has continued ever since. While some contributors advocate sceptical caution, new research provides stronger evidence than ever before that a lost Fletcher/Shakespeare Cardenio can be discerned within Double Falsehood. Uniquely, this collection combines archival research and literary analysis with accounts of recent theatrical experiments, which explore the Cardenio problem by reviving or adapting Double Falsehood, and demonstrate that such practical theatrical work throws valuable light on some of the problems that have obstructed traditional scholarly approaches. It thus offers a new paradigm for the creative interaction of scholarship and performance.

Shakespeare Reshaped, 1606-1623 (Hardcover): Gary Taylor, John Jowett Shakespeare Reshaped, 1606-1623 (Hardcover)
Gary Taylor, John Jowett
R4,808 Discovery Miles 48 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Gary Taylor and John Jowett explore the ways in which Shakespeare's texts were reshaped in his lifetime and up till the publication of the First Folio, and the kinds of outside interference to which they were subjected. As well as the powers of censorship of the Master of the Revels, in this period these included moves to expurgate profanity; major changes in theatrical conventions, notably the imposition of act divisions; and the late introduction of material by other hands. Political censorship of individual plays has already been studied in some depth: Shakespeare Reshaped concentrates on the forms of interference - expurgation, Act division, interpolation - which can usefully be examined across the whole canon, and which resulted in 'late reshaping'. These influences were at work between May 1606 and November 1623, and - unlike the political censorship, which would have come into effect immediately the plays were submitted for a licence - affected the texts years after they were first written. There is a major central study of Measure for Measure, which underwent posthumous interpolation: the book makes a strong claim for this being at the hands of Thomas Middleton. Shakespeare Reshaped will be important to all future textual scholars and editors of the plays.

The Division of the Kingdoms - Shakespeare's Two Versions of `King Lear' (Paperback): Gary Taylor, Michael Warren The Division of the Kingdoms - Shakespeare's Two Versions of `King Lear' (Paperback)
Gary Taylor, Michael Warren
R2,017 Discovery Miles 20 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

King Lear, widely regarded as Shakespeare's greatest tragedy, survives in two substantially different early texts, the Quarto of 1608 and the First Folio of 1623. Since the 18th century, however, editors have fused these two documents to produce a third, composite text that forms the basis of all modern productions and critical interpretations. Recently scholars have begun to challenge this editorial tradition, arguing that the Quarto and Folio texts represent distinct and coherent versions of the play that should not be combined. These essays, by an international team of scholars, re-examine the early texts from a series of distinct but interlocking perspectives, in a wide-ranging discussion with profound implications for all readers of Shakespeare.
