Caffeine (Paperback): Gene A. Spiller Caffeine (Paperback)
Gene A. Spiller
R1,798 Discovery Miles 17 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Caffeine-found in tea, coffee, mate, cola beverages, cocoa, and chocolate products-is an integral part of the diet of many people. Caffeine answers questions for a broad range of readers interested in the effects beverages and foods containing this dietary methylxanthine have on human health, nutrition, and physiological functioning. The composition, processing, consumption, health effects, and epidemiological correlations of caffeine are examined in detail. It is often said that too much caffeine is "bad for you." How much is too much? Get the facts on consumption of caffeine-containing products with this authoritative text. Chapters 1 and 2 offer an introductory, concise overview of the chemistry and analysis of methylxanthines. In Chapters 3 through 8, each natural product-tea, coffee, mate, and cocoa and chocolate products-is described in terms of botany, cultivation, processing, composition, and consumption patterns. Consumption of caffeine is also examined in detail in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 provides an easy-to-read overview of the basic physiology and biochemistry of caffeine. The ergogenic, cognitive, and emotional effects of caffeine are discussed in Chapters 11 and 12. Chapters 13 through 16 deal with specific health effects-serum cholesterol, cancer and fibrocystic breast disease, calcium and bone health, and human reproduction. For physicians, nutritionists, other health professionals, food scientists, and everyone interested in the effects of caffeine on the human body, Caffeine is a convenient, single-source reference.

Medical Aspects of Dietary Fiber (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980): Gene A. Spiller Medical Aspects of Dietary Fiber (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980)
Gene A. Spiller
R2,793 Discovery Miles 27 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dietary therapy has always been important to medical practice even if it has more often been sacramental than physiological in effect. "You are what you eat" meant a lot to primitive tribes whose new leader had to eat part of his predecessor, and giving diets brought out the priest in the physician even if he or she had heard that "nothing that enters into a man defiles a man. " What people eat began to take on new meaning, however, a generation ago when Schoenheimer and others made clear that body fat and muscle protein were not the sluggish unchanging masses they had appeared but instead were store houses of energy and material influenced by food, activity, and metabolic pro cesses. Fiber, or residue as it was then still called, however, seemed unimpor tant; even the gastroenterologist concerned with keeping the bowels open by three cooked fruits, three cooked vegetables, and twelve glasses of water each day sometimes felt like a shaman if his cure for constipation worked. Nobody any longer read Arbuthnot Lane's charming Victorian book, The Way Out, which placed the blame for most human ailments on constipation; Lane even removed the bowel to cure the costive ills. Burkitt revived a scientific interest in fiber and the possible connection between diet. constipation, and many physical disorders by observing the vol ume and frequency of stools on an African diet and on an English diet."

The Mediterranean Diets in Health and Disease (Hardcover, New): Gene A. Spiller The Mediterranean Diets in Health and Disease (Hardcover, New)
Gene A. Spiller
R4,570 Discovery Miles 45 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is difficult to find the moment when the idea for a book is first born. For this book, the basic concept was probably born during conversations I had in Parma, Italy, with Dr. Riccardi of the University of Naples and Dr. Jenkins of the University of Toronto (Canada). Later, in a conference room at the University of Verona (Italy) School of Medicine, I had a day-long meeting with Drs. Bosello and Cominacini of the University of Verona, and Drs. Jenkins and Riccardi and their co-workers. After an intense working day, the general plan of this book was completed. The title Mediterranean diets rather than diet was appropriately cho- sen as there is more than one Mediterranean diet, a point discussed in chapter 1. This chapter focuses on the definition of a Mediterranean diet and no matter what the reader's interest may be, it is imperative that this first chapter be carefully read. We should always remember that there are-from a preventive medi- cine point of view-good and poor Mediterranean diets. The best exam- ple is probably the difference between the high olive oil, high carbohy- drate, low meat diet of southern Italy and the high saturated fat, higher meat diets of the northern Italians. Prevalence of disease parallels these differences. Chapter 2 covers some ancient history in an easy-to-read manner that is instructional as well as fascinating even for the nonmedical scientist or the nonhistorian.

Ex-Smokers Share the Secrets of Their Success

"Refreshingly unlike the usual stop-smoking manual, this collection of over 30 interviews with people who kicked the habit follows their paths to hard-won triumph in brief oral histories and commentary. . . . The strength of the book is its refusal to simplify or glorify a gritty struggle. Realistic and persuasive." —Publishers Weekly

"A valuable little book with something for everyone. Everyone, that is, with an interest in quitting smoking." —Robert H. Williams, Washington Post

"In a fascinating and inspiring book, [the authors] give 30 former smokers a chance to share the secrets of their success. The stories can be a source of inspiration, hope, and helpful hits for smokers who have, like the storytellers, made repeated failed attempts to quit." —Jane Brody, New York Times

"If you've ever tried to quit smoking and failed, and you want to make your next puff your last one, read this book and you'll find out how to do it. These are the real life stories of a host of individuals who have made it." —Joseph A. Califano, Jr.
