Presented in six principal analytic chapters with supporting appendices, this book explores the role of Islam in precipitating Europe's twelfth century commercial renaissance. Employing the classic analytic techniques of economics, Gene Heck determines that medieval Europe's feudal interregnum was largely caused by indigenous governmental business regulation and not by shifts in international trade patterns. He then proceeds by demonstrating how Islamic economic precepts provided the ideological rationales that empowered medieval Europe to escape its three-centuries-long experiment in "Dark Age economics" in the process, providing the West with its archetypic tools of capitalism. While treatises such as Maxime Rodinson's excellent book, Islam and Capitalism, document the capitalistic nature of the Islamic economic system, in applying modern economic method to medieval orientalist historiography, this work is unique in capturing both the evolution and the impact of the system's role in forging medieval history.

Blackfoot Stories of Old (Paperback): Lena Russell, Inge Genee Blackfoot Stories of Old (Paperback)
Lena Russell, Inge Genee; Illustrated by William Singer
R694 Discovery Miles 6 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The third volume in the First Nations Language Readers series -- meant for language learners and language users -- this collection presents eight Blackfoot sories told by Lena Russell Ikkinainihki 'Gentle Singer', a fluent speaker of Blackfoot from the Kainai (Blood) reserve in southern Alberta. In contrast with other Algonquian languages, such as Cree and Saulteaux (Ojibwe), Blackfoot is not usually written in syllabics, so these stories are presented in the Blackfoot language using the Roman alphabet, together with the English translation. The spelling system is based on the conventions of the International Phonetic Alphabet, and should be transparent for native speakers of Blackfoot as well as for linguists. The Reader includes a Blackfoot-to-English glossary containing all the nouns, verbs, adjuncts, etc., found in the texts, as well as stress or pitch accents over the vowel or vowels which bear the accent.

In the early morning hours of June 6, 1944, Airborne Captain Will McBride's plane is badly hit. Most of his men are killed, and he is knocked unconscious in the back of the plane. He awakens sometime later to find that he is alone with the badly wounded pilot, who has been flying without instruments in an unknown direction. Will decides to jump anyway, and finds himself in Brittany, an as yet quiet backwater of the war. Taking refuge in a convent, he encounters Claire, a young postulant and, in his effort to make his way back to Allied lines, encounters the French Resistance, a downed American fighter pilot, and a feisty and beautiful British agent as they make their way through France and ultimately to Paris and the events surrounding the Hitler plot and the Liberation.
