This book discusses the resilience of communities in both developed
and developing world contexts. It investigates the notion of
'resilience' and the challenges faced by local communities around
the world to deal with disturbances (natural hazards or human-made)
that may threaten their long-term survival. Using global examples,
specific emphasis is placed on how learning processes, traditions,
policies and politics affect the resilience of communities and what
constraints and opportunities exist for communities to raise
resilience levels.
This title was first published in 2000: This volume provides a
detailed examination of agri-environmental policy within ten
European states. Individual chapters consider the agricultural and
environmental policy contexts within each state and examine the
range and significance of agri-environmental policy proposed in
addition to their spatial and territorial impact, their
policy-making implications and their consequences for the
structures, institutions and actors of national farming policy both
across and within national borders. Drawing from ten national
profiles and the data sets provided, the book provides a
comparative analysis of implementation trends, filling a gap in the
literature on this topic. Taking European legislation as its
starting point, the comparative section of the book examines how
Member States have responded to EU imperatives in their budgetary
commitments, in their implementation strategies and in the policy
outputs that result. The study identifies similarities across
European nations in the territorial and agricultural focus of
agri-environmental policy and draws attention to the alternative.

This book focuses on understanding farming transition pathways
towards sustainability, using case studies from Europe. It assesses
the utility of the multi-level perspective in transition theory for
addressing contemporary issues and identifies future research
needs, making it an essential read for researchers of rural or
agricultural change.

Geoff Wilson is well known for his expertise in developing knots
for fishing, however, the application of these knots to specific
fishing situations, techniques, and fish species has often been
left to the novice to discover. In "Complete Book of Fishing
Systems," Geoff takes a selection of fishing knots and explains how
to apply them to a series of rigs for situations that the angler
will encounter.
Covering situations from light line fishing, which a novice may
find incomprehensible as they start, to the more elaborate game
fishing and stronger fishing requirements, this book is a wealth of
practical fishing instruction.

`. . . those two mighty products of the land, the Canterbury lamb
and the All Blacks, have made New Zealand what she is in spite of
politicians' claims to the contrary', wrote Dick Brittenden in
1954. `For many in New Zealand, prowess at sport replaces the
social graces; in the pubs, during the furious session between 5pm
and closing time an hour later, the friend of a relative of a horse
trainer is a veritable patriarch. No matador in Madrid, no tenor in
Turin could be sure of such flattering attention.' As Brittenden
suggested, sport has played a central part in the social and
cultural history of Aotearoa New Zealand throughout its history.
This book tells the story of sport in New Zealand for the first
time, from the Maori world to today's professional athletes.
Through rugby and netball, bodybuilding and surf lifesaving, the
book introduces readers to the history of the codes, the
organisations and the players. It takes us into the stands and on
to the sidelines to examine the meaning of sport to its
participants, its followers, and to the communities to which they
belonged. Why did rugby become much more important than soccer in
New Zealand? What role have Maori played in our sporting life? Do
we really `punch above our weight' in international sport? Does
sport still define our national identity? Viewing New Zealand sport
as activity and as imagination, Sport and the New Zealanders is a
major history of a central strand of New Zealand life.
