Paying tribute to one of the more original theorist of the late 20th and early 21st century, Rational Radicalism and Political Theory probes the thought of Stephen Eric Bronner. This collection of essays encompasses themes such as the Enlightenment's radical legacy, the impulse of cosmopolitanism, the rejuvenation of socialist theory and politics, and advances in Critical Theory. These essays make new contributions to many areas of left political theory, while at the same time reflecting on the ways Stephen Bronner's ideas serve to generate a new kind of critical political theory. Blending political and intellectual history, normative and moral argumentation, and forays into the nature of politics itself, this book brings together new voices in political theory to assess Bronner's contributions and pave new paths for the future of political theory.

Jean Jaures - The Inner Life of Social Democracy (Paperback): Geoffrey Kurtz Jean Jaures - The Inner Life of Social Democracy (Paperback)
Geoffrey Kurtz
R975 Discovery Miles 9 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Jean Jaures was a towering intellectual and political leader of the democratic left at the turn of the twentieth century, but he is little remembered today outside of France, and his contributions to political thought are little studied anywhere. In Jean Jaures: The Inner Life of Social Democracy, Geoffrey Kurtz introduces Jaures to an American audience. The parliamentary and philosophical leader of French socialism from the 1890s until his assassination in 1914, Jaures was the only major socialist leader of his generation who was educated as a political philosopher. At the core of his life's work was a synthesis of socialist and liberal-republican traditions, the merger of which both challenged old conventions and posed new difficulties. Jaures insisted that theory and practice must inform each other, even as a tension remains between them.
In addition to recovering the questions asked by the first generation of social democrats, Kurtz's aim in this book is to reconstruct Jaures's political thought in light of current theoretical and political debates. To achieve this, he gives readings of several of Jaures's major writings and speeches, spanning work from his early adulthood to the final years of his life, paying attention to not just what Jaures is saying, but how he says it."
