Featuring new experiments, a new essay, and new coverage of
nanotechnology, this organic chemistry laboratory textbook offers a
comprehensive treatment of laboratory techniques including small
scale and some microscale methods that use standard-scale
("macroscale") glassware and equipment. The book is organized based
on essays and topics of current interest and covers a large number
of traditional organic reactions and syntheses, as well as
experiments with a biological or health science focus. Seven
introductory technique-based experiments, thirteen project-based
experiments, and sections on green chemistry and biofuels spark
students' interest and engage them in the learning process.
Instructors may choose to offer Cengage Learning's optional Premium
Website, which contains videos on basic organic laboratory
techniques.
This collection of essays sheds light on the history of Switzerland
during World War II, covering such topics as: trade; financial
relations; gold; refugees; defence; and foreign relations. It also
touches on official post-war measures to suppress the problematic
aspects of Switzerland's involvement in the war.

INTRODUCTION TO SPECTROSCOPY.This proven book provides a systematic
introduction to spectra and basic theoretical concepts in
spectroscopic methods and includes up-to-date spectra; a modern
presentation of one-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)
spectroscopy; an introduction to biological molecules in mass
spectrometry; and coverage of modern techniques alongside DEPT,
COSY, and HECTOR.

Torn Modernism illuminates an important moment in the history of
the Kunstmuseum Basel's collection. In 1937 the Nazi cultural
policy denounced thousands of works as "degenerate" and forcibly
removed from German museums. The Third Reich's Ministry of
Propaganda correctly assumed that a portion of such works would
find buyers abroad, in this way certain artworks deemed
"internationally exploitable" reached the art market via various
channels. Georg Schmidt (1896-1966), the museum's director at the
time, managed in 1939 to acquire the Painting Animal Destinies by
Franz Marc (1880-1916) and twenty avant-garde masterpieces all at
once. In the catalogue, renowned experts trace the events based on
the seizures in German museums and explain the historical contexts.
The actors of the institutions and the art market are presented,
and the Nazi regime's act of cultural violence is revealed, which
resulted in an artificial fragmentation of Modernism into art that
was "exploitable" on the one hand, and art that had been destroyed
or forgotten on the other. Contributions on the auction of the
Galerie Fischer in Lucerne, on Georg Schmidt's approach, and on the
classification of the acquisitions in the context of Basel's
collection history bring specific Swiss aspects into focus.

Epoche beschrieben, sondern Konzepte, Platze, Ereignisse,
Kunstwerke, Konsumgegenstande, die gesamteuropaisch von Bedeutung
sind. Der zweite Band illustriert diese Faktoren anhand von
Fallbeispielen wie Der Stier, Europa-Hymne, Aachener Karlspreis,
Mona Lisa, Dantes Commedia divina, Goethes Faust, Beethovens IX.,
Rom, Anne Frank, Frauenemanzipation, Die Alpen, Auschwitz, Die
U-Bahn, Das Kaffeehaus, Liberte Egalite Fraternite, Die
Lebensvorstellungen, Konsummuster: Rassismus, Gospel-Gottesdienste,
Kunstkammern, Das chinesische Restaurant, Che Guevara, UNESCO."

Comet Photo AG was founded in Zurich 1952 to supply images to local
and national media. The agency quickly built a reputation for both
the documentary and aesthetic quality of its photographers' work,
with the 1950s and 1960s arguably marking the culmination their
achievements. Commercially, Comet Photo's heyday were the 1960s and
1970s, followed by a slow decline eventually leading to its
closing-down in 1999. Comet Photo's legacy of around 1m images is
now kept at ETH Zurich's Image Archive. Photo Mosaic Switzerland
features some 150 images from the Comet Photo collection,
documenting the rapid changes Switzerland underwent during the 20th
century's later decades. They are arranged by topic, such as change
and modernisation, industry, agriculture, the vanishing and
vanished, the traditional and timeless, celebrities and glamour, or
major events. An introductory essay tells the story of Comet Photo
AG and its work and legacy, placing it among its competitors
national and international, and looks also at Switzerland's social
and cultural history from the 1950s to the end of the 20th century.
While other states imposed economic sanctions on the apartheid
regime of South Africa, Swiss authorities long adhered to the
position that South Africa is a state like any other. Swiss big
business corporations saw an attractive trade partner in South
Africa; in part, they also profited from the boycotts of others.
Additionally, some political forces sympathised openly with the
regime in Pretoria. Encouraged by the debate concerning Swiss
policy and activity during the Second World War, in 1997 the order
was given to initiate a historical study of Swiss behaviour towards
the apartheid regime. Thus this report, commissioned by the Swiss
parliament and the Federal Council, and passed over to the Swiss
National Science Foundation for execution, came into being. It
unites the results of ten different research projects. The report
identifies the most important players involved in fashioning
relations with South Africa, it explains the legal situation in
which these persons acted, and it describes the thought processes
that led to the actions. The longest chapter deals with the
attitudes and the areas of activity in the economic sector. Here
the trade with loans, gold, diamonds and war materials is
paramount. Other chapters are concerned with questions that are not
primarily economic in nature, such as political declarations, the
illusion of being in the role of a mediator, contacts in sports and
culture, and, after 1986, the beginning of support for the black
majority.
