In 1754, a young Virginian named George Washington leads an expedition into the Ohio Territory that triggers the French and Indian War in North America. Colonial and English armies are continually battling French and Indian forces for control of the Ohio region, but are suffering defeat after defeat. In England, however, William Pitt is appointed Secretary of State. One of his highest priorities is to gain control of the tedious war, so he appoints General James Wolfe, a proven veteran with tactical and strategic abilities, to command in America. In With Wolfe in Canada, James Walsham is left to his own devices after the death of his father, and winds up getting involved with gangs and street thugs. He joins the British Army and soon finds himself climbing the cliffs below Quebec, where the British, under Wolfe, meet the French Army of General Montcalm on the Plains of Abraham. This is where the decisive battle for the North American continent is fought, and Walsham is in the middle of it all. The British achieve a great victory at Quebec and double the size of their empire in the north; yet, within a few years, that victory leads to a new war with the colonists-a little conflict called the American Revolution. On August 24, 1572, Parisian mobs massacred more than 2,000 Protestant men, women, and children, and triggered further persecutions across France. In response, soldiers of the Reformed Church took up arms against the slaughter brought about by the Catholic armies. Young Phillip Fletcher, of English heritage, joins the service of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny and Henry of Navarre to fight for religious freedom. Finding himself behind the battle lines of the Roman Catholic House of Guise, he leads a squad of veteran soldiers as they fight for family and land. His swordsmanship and wit take him through harrowing struggles, where he finds himself rescuing a woman of nobility. Many of the surviving French Calvinists, known as Huguenots, flea from their land to various European countries, where they learn to overcome the great price they have paid for their religious freedom, and Phillip returns to England a hero. It was due to these two men that Scotland was able to overthrow English domination and become a free and independent people. In 1296, Edward I invaded Scotland in hopes of consolidating his claim to the Scottish throne. He defeated John Balliol at the Battle of Berwick; but his claim to the throne would not go unchallenged. In 1297, William Wallace struck back and defeated the English at Stirling Bridge; but he was in turn defeated at the Battle of Falkirk. The war was not over, however. In 1306, Robert the Bruce had himself crowned King of Scotland and renewed the war Wallace had begun. By defeating the English at the Battle of Bannockburn, he secured for Scotland a place as an independent nation. In Freedom's Cause, Henty tells the story of Scottish independence through the eyes of a young man, Archie Forbes. He forms a group of scouts for Wallace's army, participates in the victory at Stirling Bridge, and the defeat at Falkirk. After Wallace's death, he links up with Robert Bruce, and joins in the victory at Bannockburn. This is one of the best novels ever written about this period, and a must-read for anyone of Scottish ancestry, or with an interest in Scotland. They were originally formed to support the many thousands of Christians who were making pilgrimages to the Holy City of Jerusalem, and to protect them from Muslim attacks. Because of this mission, they were also known as the Knights Hospitaller. By today's standards, however, they were quite unusual in that they were warriors, but they were also monks-having taken vows of obedience, chastity, and poverty. Our story begins with Gervaise Tresham joining the Knights of St. John on the island of Rhodes. He soon distinguishes himself by foiling a plot, which saves a large part of Italy from the ravages of the Muslim corsairs. For this, he is knighted by the Grand Prior of the Order; but all is not well, as he develops two additional problems. First, the Hospitaller garrison at Rhodes is under attack by 160 Ottoman ships, and 70,000 fanatical Muslim troops. Second, he has fallen in love and wants to get married, which can be a bit of a problem if you are a monk and have taken vows of chastity.
