Not illustrated.1916 Excerpt: ... five minutes is allowed for the passage of the Salvarsan into the vein, and the rate of flow is regulated by the height of the receptacle. This operation requires strict asepsis at every step. Dose. Speaking of the use of Salvarsan in syphilis, Ehrlich says: "The dose depends entirely on the type and stage of the disease." Ordinarily, fr. 0.1 to 0.6 gm. is used at intervals of from 5 to 10 days. In rare instances smaller or larger doses may be tried. Caution. When danger is to be feared begin treatment with a series of very small doses at long intervals, or an energetic course of Mercury. The combined use of large doses of Salvarsan and of Mercury at the same time is believed to be unsafe. Note.--Alternate courses of Salvarsan and of Mercury are to be recommended for syphilis. NEOSALVARSAN. Action. Like that of Salvarsan but less powerful in equal dosage. Toxic Effects. Similar to those of Salvarsan but milder with equal dosage. Indications. In may be preferred to Salvarsan because easier to prepare, or when toxic effects are feared. Contraindications. As for Salvarsan. Administration. Use immediately, because contact with air causes rapid decomposition. Do not mix the drug until everything is prepared and the needle already in the vein. Dose. 0.9 gm. of Neosalvarsan contains the same quantity of arsenic as 0.6 gm. Salvarsan. Preparation of Alkaline Solution of Salvarsan for Intravenous Use.
