There are complex interrelationships between trade, aid and
development, and with the move to a greater integration of
economies throughout the world, trade has become a vital factor in
the economic, social and political development of Third World
nations. Trade, Aid and Global Interdependence presents a concise
analysis of this vast topic. Trade is introduced as a concept and
as an activity; aid and global interdependence are then described
in the context of trade in practice. This discussion of the world's
shifting patterns of trade is illustrated with case studies from
Asia, Africa and Central and Latin America.
First published in 1990, this study analyses the development and
success of the Malaysian economy since independence in 1957. The
author explores various facets of the contemporary
centrally-planned development policy and the colonial inheritance
from which it derives. It becomes evident that rural bias is
significant in the area of primary commodities, including rubber
and tin, and in relation to the economy as a whole. This is in
spite of a conspicuous shift in the manufacturing sector toward
export-orientated high technology products.

"Trade, Aid and Global Interdependence" introduces trade as both
concept and activity, placing aid wihting the context of trade in
practice. The trend towards the globalization of trade, especially
in the light of GATT and its emphasis on greater integration of
economies throughout the world, means developing countries
increasingly want both trade and aid, as aid alone is insufficient
to bring about growth and economic development. Using a number of
Third World case studies from Africa, Asia and Central and Latin
America, this book analyzes this competitive partnership of
international trade and economic development and discusses how
various development strategies have been devised to respond to
particular economic, social and environmental challenges.
"Trade, Aid and Global Interdependence" is a comprehensive
introduction to the complex topic of international trade and
provides an important evaluation of global development--past,
present and future.
