This was originally a soprano solo with strings. The solo line has been entwined such that all players get a turn with the melody while the other parts are in a supporting role. The scales and arpeggios in this showpiece fit nicely under the fingers which makes it sound harder than it is It has been scored here for 2 flutes and 2 clarinets.

George Frederic Handel wrote his most famous oratorio, Messiah, in a little over three weeks. There is little doubt that this work is one of the most famous and often performed choral pieces in history. Handel conducted many performances in his day and there never seemed to have been a period when the work was not played.

This version of the famous Hail the Conquering Hero opens with a solo, gradually adds voices and builds in dynamic, then the sound drops to a solo in the lowest part which starts the building again.
