Larry Browning, George H Morris
R5,059 Discovery Miles 50 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Addressing both renowned theories and standard applications, Stories of Life in the Workplace explains how stories affect human practices and organizational life. Authors Larry Browning and George H. Morris explore how we experience, interpret, and personalize narrative stories in our everyday lives, and how these communicative acts impact our social aims and interactions. In pushing the boundaries of how we perceive narrative and organization, the authors include stories that are broadly applicable across all concepts and experiences.

With a perception of narrative and its organizational application, chapters focus on areas such as pedagogy, therapy, project management, strategic planning, public communication, and organizational culture. Readers will learn to:

  • differentiate and gain an in-depth understanding of perspectives from varying narrators;
  • recognize how stories are constructed and used in organizations, and modify the stories they tell;
  • view stories as a means to promote an open exchange of creativity.

By integrating a range of theories and practices, Browning and Morris write for an audience of narrative novices and scholars alike. With a distinctive approach and original insight, Stories of Life in the Workplace shows how individuality, developing culture, and the psychology of the self are constructed with language and how the acceptance of one 's self is accomplished by reaffirming and rearranging one 's story.

Cecilia Lonnell; Foreword by George H Morris; Interview of Carl Hester, Pippa Funnell
R590 Discovery Miles 5 900 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

There are many books and DVDs devoted to the technical training of horse and rider - how to perform movements correctly, clear obstacles, communicate efficiently, and in other ways attain the idealised image of an athletic partnership that results in competitive success. But this book is different: its focus is how the rider and trainer can make it easier for the horse to perform optimally. This includes improved understanding of what are reasonable expectations for a particular horse at a certain level of schooling, how to improve his fitness (including strength and conditioning), as well as background on how injuries may develop as a result of interaction between internal and external factors, such as genetics, conformation, management, and training. Relying on her veterinary background, in-depth research, and dozens of interviews with top riders and trainers from around the world - including Beezie Madden, Carl Hester, and Pippa Funnell, to name just a few - Lonnell provides guidelines for nurturing a happy, healthy equine athlete. With special focus on conscientious pacing when building the horse's physical capability over time, diversification of schooling practices, detail-oriented management and care, and putting the horse's needs above competitive ambition, readers are given a solid grasp of what it takes to truly reach the pinnacle of equestrian sport - and remain there - on a consistent basis. Throughout, gorgeous colour photographs of world-class horses and the people who work with them visually demonstrate the success of these methods.

George H Morris; Edited by John Strassburger
R548 Discovery Miles 5 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

George H. Morris has ridden and trained international show jumpers, champion show hunters and equitation stars for more than half a century. Morris, now the U.S. show jumping team's chef d'equipe, was named one of the 50 Most Influential Horsemen of the 20th Century in 1999 by The Chronicle of the Horse, the magazine for which he's written a monthly "Between Rounds" column since 1989.
Now, John Strassburger, who recently retired as the Chronicle's editor after 20 years and who created the magazine's "Between Rounds" section, has selected Morris' 50 best columns to preserve the equestrian legend's words for horsemen and women who are committed to riding and training their horses correctly.
The book is divided into four sections to encompass Morris' major themes over the last 17 years: In the section called It's Not Like It Used To Be, Morris analyzes the evolution of the sport he loves over the last century and decries the declining standards of horsemanship he sees around him. In What Good Teachers Teach, he offers his own unique brand of classically based advise on how to train riders and their horses. In I've Always Been Devoted To The Forward Seat, Morris explains why the century-old technique he favors is the best way to jump horses. And in George On Tour, he describes a few of his travels to destinations from the former Soviet Union to the Athens Olympics.
This collection of Morris' columns is the first of the five-part Chronicle Comment Series. For the second book in the series, due in Spring 2007, Strassburger will collect his 75 best Commentaries, from 1982 to 2006. Then he'll collect the best columns by three more "Between Rounds" columnists?Victor Hugo-Vidal, Denny Emerson and Anne Gribbons?for publication in late 2007 and in 2008.
