Being a priest is likened to being a shepherd. People do, from time to time, need a poke here or a prod there. But mostly, they need to know someone is watching out for them. Rev. William Billow has been that gentle guiding hand for multiple communities across the nation, but he is best known for his services in Washington, DC, from St. Albans School to Washington Cathedral. He practices "the ministry of presence," witnessing and overseeing the baptisms, weddings, and funerals of the members of his flocks. As he moves from community to community, his story does not fail to enlighten and inspire.

"When George Bush went to China in 1974, our two countries were still very much in the discovery stage of our relationship. His honest and personal reflections provide a rare, almost 'behind the scenes' window into that fascinating time period, and are a great reminder of how far we have come. The book is also a wonderful insight into the thought processes of a future president, who I believe history will judge as one of our greatest foreign policy presidents."--Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft, USAF (ret.), former national security advisor to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H. W. Bush

"George H. W. Bush's China diary captures a pivotal moment when Americans were reintroduced to the Middle Kingdom after a generation of estrangement. It also reveals much of the humanity, humor, and light foreign policy touch of a future president and presidential father. We can be grateful to Jeffrey Engel for putting this important document into its rich historical context and making it accessible."--Timothy Naftali, author of "George H. W. Bush"

"Engel's historical editing is the perfect frame to this lucid window on late-Maoist China. In the Bush diary's candid entries the reader can 'eavesdrop' on a statesman educating himself for the personal, pragmatic diplomacy that would change the world."--Walter A. McDougall, author of Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Heavens and the Earth"

"Full of useful and previously unavailable information, "The China Diary of George H. W. Bush" is a timely publication. This valuable narrative offers a firsthand account of U.S.-China relations during a critical political juncture, talks about the opportunities and challenges that America faced in Vietnam and elsewhere, andrecords the life of the Beijing diplomatic circle in the last years of the Cultural Revolution. There is absolutely no doubt that this is an important book."--Chen Jian, Cornell University

""The China Diary of George H. W. Bush" is a real gem: accessible, lively, and informative. In its entirety, the diary makes a real contribution to our understanding of Bush's evolution as a politician and policymaker, and to our knowledge of Sino-American relations at a pivotal moment in time."--Michael Schaller, University of Arizona

"The insightful diary entries, the helpful chapter introductions, and the superb footnote annotations make this a sure winner for experts and non-experts alike! "The China Diary of George H. W. Bush" will be a widely read, widely cited, and widely influential book."--Jeremi Suri, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Fatal Destiny named 2013 Police-Writers.com Book of the Year. The brutal death of Dr. Pam Basu and forcible taking of her car on September 8, 1992 is the singular incident, which defined carjacking. Her senseless killing was truly the murder reported around the world. From CBS, NBC, and ABC to CNN and FOX News, People and Time Magazines, her death touched off a media frenzy. The outcry over Doctor Basu's murder brought thunderous applause from members of her community when they were told the suspects could face the death penalty. But the cries for justice continued and her death became the catalyst for House Bill H.R. 4542, The Anti-Car Theft Act of 1992. President George H. W. Bush signed that bill into law in the presence of members of the International Association of Chiefs of Police on October 25, 1992. The case continues to make national news, as suspects pursue appeals and challenge legislation and court rulings. The crime has been cited in the Baltimore Sun, Washington Post, New York Times, London Times, The Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and others. The media has referred to the Basu carjacking as "the case that won't go away." The crime stands as a lead case cited in legal documents, court cases and dictionaries. It has been cited as a primary case in West's Encyclopedia of American Law and Webster's Online Dictionary. Howard County Police Officer Jody Tookey (first officer on the scene of the crime) said, "Two days after the murder I sat down to dinner and suddenly became sick. I couldn't touch my food, because I could only see her (Pam's) body lying there in the road. Sometimes my stomach still turns. I had nightmares for days. i saw the victim standing in the roadway asking me for help. She would yell at me to do something and her child would cry. In the days before the first trial I had the nightmares again. I still have horrible dreams, but not as often. People tell me I'll always have them." Yet, this hideous killing held a double twist that seemed more suited to a Hollywood Thriller. Pam's husband, Steve, while videotaping her departure, captured the images of the two men who would moments later brutally beat and drag to death his loving wife. And, she lived and died in a town called Savage, Maryland.

The principle that has guided us is simple: our objective is to help the Baltic peoples achieve their aspirations, not to punish the Soviet Union. In our recent discussions with the Soviet leadership we have been given representations, which, if fulfilled, would result in the withdrawal of some Soviet forces, a re-opening of dialogue with the republics, and a move away from violence.

Coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of his inauguration and the commission of the USS "George H.W. Bush," a collection of the forty-first president's speeches.
Here, in his own words, is the record of George H.W. Bush's presidency. Chosen and annotated by former President Bush, these forty-two speeches reflect his concerns, his political philosophy, and the triumphs and challenges of his years in office. Whether accepting the nomination, speaking to the Armed Forces in the Persian Gulf, presenting Presidential Citations to Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, or marking the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, these speeches, great and small, defined the first Bush years.
Marking significant events in world history, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, and U.S. military action against Iraq, this collection documents a transformative period in world history and the voice and politics of one of our great leaders.
