Sir George Francis Hill (1867 1948), was perhaps best known as a
numismatist, although his scholarly interests and accomplishments
included a range of time periods and subjects. A classicist by
training, Hill built his career at the British Museum's department
of coins and medals. In his forty-three years there he produced
volumes on coins of antiquity; Greek history and art; coins,
heraldry, and iconography of medieval and Renaissance Italy; and
treasure troves. In 1931 Hill became the Museum's director and
principal librarian, the first archaeologist to hold this post. His
four-volume History of Cyprus (1940 52) ranged from Cyprus's
earliest years to the twentieth century, and became the standard
text on the subject. It is a valuable resource for scholars of the
country, of antiquity and of the Mediterranean world.

This tribal history of the Spokane Indians begins with an
account of their early life in the Pacific Northwest central
plateau region. It then describes in harrowing detail the U.S.
government's encroachment on their lands and the subsequent
enforced settlement of Spokane people on reservations. The volume
concludes with a presentation of twentieth-century
developments.
This edition of "The Spokane Indians" features a new foreword
and introduction, which provide up-to-date information on the
Spokane people and their most recent efforts to recover and
strengthen their historical and cultural heritage.
Proceed to Peshawar is a story of adventure in the Hindu Kush
Mountains and of a previously untold military and naval
intelligence mission during World War II by two American officers
along 800 miles of the Durand Line, the porous border between
Afghanistan and Pakistan. They passed through the tribal areas and
the princely states of the North-West Frontier Province, and into
Baluchistan. This appears to be the first time that any American
officials were permitted to travel for any distance along either
side of the Durand Line. Many British political and military
officers believed that India would soon be free, and that the Great
Game between Russia and Britain in the nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries would then come to an end. Some of them thought
that the United States should, and would, assume Britain's role in
Central Asia, and they wanted to introduce America to this ancient
contest.

which he continues in Volume 3.
