First published in 1980, Socialism, Social Welfare and the Soviet
Union examines the views of Marx, Engels and Lenin on what
constitutes a socialist form of provision of social security,
income, education, health and housing. The authors discuss the
implementation of these ideas in the Soviet Union since the 1917
Revolution in the context of economic and political development,
and describe the social services in the Soviet Union, assessing the
extent to which the original ideas have been matched by reality.
They also briefly survey the views of several East European
academic writers on social policy, outlining some distinctive
features of social policy in the Eastern bloc. The authors' general
conclusion is that the Soviet Union has made great progress in
social policy provision; from their research and from their visits
in the course of writing this book, they show that the social
services of the Soviet Union are as good as and, in some ways, more
comprehensive than those of Western Europe. Equally important is
their conclusion that a society in which the means of production
and distribution are nationalised, and which makes a full provision
of social services is not necessarily a socialist society. This
book will appeal to students of sociology, political science and
area studies.
What does being an archaeologist mean to Indigenous persons? How
and why do some become archaeologists? What has led them down a
path to what some in their communities have labeled a colonialist
venture? What were are the challenges they have faced, and the
motivations that have allowed them to succeed? How have they
managed to balance traditional values and worldview with Western
modes of inquiry? And how are their contributions broadening the
scope of archaeology? Indigenous archaeologists have the often
awkward role of trying to serves as spokespeople both for their
home community and for the scientific community of archaeologists.
This volume tells the stories--in their own words-- of 37
indigenous archaeologists from six continents, how they became
archaeologists, and how their dual role affects their relationships
with their community and their professional colleagues. Sponsored

Ethnographic archaeology has emerged as a form of inquiry into
archaeological dilemmas that arise as scholars question older, more
positivistic paradigms. Ethnographic Archaeologies describes
diverse methods, objectives, and rationalities currently employed
in the making of engaged and collaborative archaeological
research. The contributors to this volume, for example, understand
ethnographic archaeology variously as a means of critical
engagement with heritage stakeholders, as the basis of
public-policy debates, as a critical archaeological study of ethnic
groups, as the study of what archaeology actually does (as opposed
to what researchers often think they are doing) in excavations and
surveys, and as a foundation for transnational collaborations among
archaeologists. What keeps the term "ethnographic archaeology"
coherent and relevant is the consensus among practitioners that
they are embarking on a new archaeological path by attempting to
engage the present directly and fundamentally.
This essential information captures the state of the composites
industry to assist engineering/technical professionals in charting
a course for achieving economic success. The material
characteristics of composites, their applications, and complex
composites manufacturing processes depend on many factors. These
are all fully considered and presented to meet the challenges that
face this marketplace. The expert panel of writers from various
industry segments (i.e., commercial/military aerospace, wind
energy, automotive, and bicycle industries) address fundamental
topics and explore the affordability of composites from raw
material to end-of life-disposal costs with skilled perspectives
that include: Material characteristics and economics of composite
structure Complex manufacturing and specifics of assembly methods
Applications for composites Product and human health Safety and
environmental impacts The authors provide strong basic economics
concepts that are directly applied to the composites industry. The
content conveys both the reality of the industry, as well as the
trends and constantly emerging challenges that impact the cost of
composites and are necessary for return on investment, as well as
enabling the full potential of composites.
