La fonte originale delle storie che compaiono in questa raccolta e
la letteratura classica della Cina del 17 Degrees secolo, in
particolare l'opera di Feng Menglong, scrittore della dinastia Ming
che, nel 1627, pubblico queste novelle. Soulie de Morant le
ripropose nel 1929 (col titolo "Eastern Shame Girl"), mantenendo lo
stile grazioso e raffinato dell'ultimo periodo imperiale. L'opera
fu tacciata di libertinismo e, come tale, incontro una sorta di
ostruzionismo, nonostante il successivo riconoscimento del suo
valore letterario. Il volume venne riedito nel 1935 col nuovo
titolo di "Chinese Love Tales".
