New technologies in 3D printing offer innovative capabilities in
surgery, biomedical engineering and nanotechnology. This hot topic
title synthesizes the most up-to-date information on 3D printing
and provides guidance on the optimal application in today's
surgical practice, from evaluation in the technology, patient
education uses, to ethics and intellectual property, through to
virtual reality and future opportunities. Includes expert guidance
on the challenges, opportunities, and limitations of 3D printing in
the field of surgery. Covers patient and surgical education, ethics
and intellectual property, quality and safety, 3D printing as it
relates to nanotechnology, tissue engineering, virtual augmented
reality, and more. Consolidates today's available information in
this rapidly growing area into a single convenient resource.
This book represents an effort to document the experience of a
carefully-chosen group of international surgeons, regarding the use
of imaging technology in their everyday practice. The aim of this
book is to help medical students and surgeons at all levels of
training and practice to understand the basics of the more common
imaging techniques (CT, MRI, MRCP, US, XR, radionuclide scan,
etc.), including their advantages and disadvantages and their
optimal use and limitations. Following that, the application of
these imaging modalities, including the most current developments,
in the different fields and subspecialties of surgical practice
(including, but not limited to, surgical oncology, neurosurgery,
endocrine surgery breast surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, pancreatic
surgery, transplantation, urology etc.) is presented in detail.
What is important about this book is that it is written by an
international group of surgeons who are experts in their respective
fields and who offer us here their wisdom and experience, regarding
what the communication between the surgeon and the radiologist
should be, in order to provide these complex patients with the best
possible care. Apart from the radiological and imaging tools
commonly used in current practices, future prospects and challenges
regarding how imaging technology can increase surgical efficiency
in the future are explored. The overall goal of this book is to
help surgeons in today's technology-driven environment have a
proper understanding of the use and limitations of modern imaging
techniques.
This book represents a refreshing and broad view of the nature of
allografts, as well as the challenges involved in their use as
critical therapy for a variety of different health problems. It is
the work of a group of very talented and experienced physicians
representing different medical disciplines, but all of them
intimately involved with the use of allografts, presenting their
distilled experience. The notion of allografts is explored in
specialty areas ranging from orthopaedics and thoracic surgery to
kidney and liver transplantation, in an effort to identify certain
common themes having to do with the immunological response to the
allograft and the various methods to avoid rejection. Chapters in
this book present current challenges in the use of bone allografts
in complex orthopaedic procedures, in addition to dealing in depth
with the use of hepatic and renal allografts in liver and kidney
transplantation. Complex issues, such as the role of the immune
system trying to deal with allograft acceptance or rejection on the
one hand, and the presence of hepatitis B or C infection on the
other hand, with the addition of the possibility of coexisting
hepatocellular malignancy, are at the core of this book. The
authors present the therapeutic problems seen in clinical practice
and offer possible solutions, based on their extensive experience.
This book will be a valuable resource to scientists involved in
disciplines such as transplantation, immunology, and orthopaedics,
as the themes that are analysed here cover a broad range of areas.
