Since the early 20th century, medical imaging has been dominated by
monochrome imaging modalities such as x-ray, computed tomography,
ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging. As a result, color
information has been overlooked in medical image analysis
applications. Recently, various medical imaging modalities that
involve color information have been introduced. These include
cervicography, dermoscopy, fundus photography, gastrointestinal
endoscopy, microscopy, and wound photography. However, in
comparison to monochrome images, the analysis of color images is a
relatively unexplored area. The multivariate nature of color image
data presents new challenges for researchers and practitioners as
the numerous methods developed for monochrome images are often not
directly applicable to multichannel images. The goal of this volume
is to summarize the state-of-the-art in the utilization of color
information in medical image analysis.
This volume of Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing
contains accepted papers presented at WSC17, the 17th Online World
Conference on Soft Computing in Industrial Applications, held from
December 2012 to January 2013 on the Internet. WSC17 continues a
successful series of scientific events started over a decade ago by
the World Federation of Soft Computing. It brought together
researchers from over the world interested in the ever advancing
state of the art in the field. Continuous technological
improvements make this online forum a viable gathering format for a
world class conference. The aim of WSC17 was to disseminate
excellent research results and contribute to building a global
network of scientists interested in both theoretical foundations
and practical applications of soft computing. The 2012 edition of
the Online World Conference on Soft Computing in Industrial
Applications consisted of general track and special session on
Continuous Features Discretization for Anomaly Intrusion Detectors
Generation and special session on Emerging Theories and
Applications in Transportation Science. A total of 33 high quality
research papers were accepted after a rigorous review process and
are provided in this book.
We often come across computational optimization virtually in all
branches of engineering and industry. Many engineering problems
involve heuristic search and optimization, and, once discretized,
may become combinatorial in nature, which gives rise to certain
difficulties in terms of solution procedure. Some of these problems
have enormous search spaces, are NP-hard and hence require
heuristic solution techniques. Another difficulty is the lack of
ability of classical solution techniques to determine appropriate
optima of non-convex problems. Under these conditions, recent
advances in computational optimization techniques have been shown
to be advantageous and successful compared to classical approaches.
This Volume presents some of the latest developments with a focus
on the design of algorithms for computational optimization and
their applications in practice. Through the chapters of this book,
researchers and practitioners share their experience and newest
methodologies with regard to intelligent optimization and provide
various case studies of the application of intelligent optimization
techniques in real-world applications. This book can serve as an
excellent reference for researchers and graduate students in
computer science, various engineering disciplines and the industry.

University of Salerno was honored to celebrate the 10th edition of
VISUAL, choosing a prestigioushotel situated on the enchanting Gulf
of Salerno, located between the beautiful Coast of Amal? and the
Cilento National Park (both part of UNESCO patrimony). VISUAL 2008
received 58 submissions, which were reviewed by more than 38
international experts in the related research ?elds from 19
