Education for Liberation - The Politics of Promise and Reform Inside and Beyond America's Prisons (Paperback): Gerard... Education for Liberation - The Politics of Promise and Reform Inside and Beyond America's Prisons (Paperback)
Gerard Robinson, Elizabeth English Smith; Foreword by Newt Gingrich, Van Jones
R1,024 Discovery Miles 10 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Almost 650,000 men and women, approximately the size of the city of Memphis, TN, return home from prison every year. Oftentimes with some pocket change and a bus ticket, they reenter society and struggle to find work, housing, a supportive social network. Economic barriers, the stigma of a felony conviction, and mental health and addiction challenges make reentry a bleak picture, leading some to return to a life of crime. A Department of Justice study of 404,638 inmates in 30 states released in 2005, for example, identified that 68 percent were rearrested within 3 years and 77 percent within 5 years of release. Education and workforce readiness programs must be central components in better preparing individuals to successfully reenter society - and stay out of prison. This book compiles chapters written by individuals on the right and the left of the political spectrum, and within and outside the fields of prison education and reentry that address this need for reform. Chapters feature the voices of prominent national figures pushing for reform, current and former students who have benefitted from an education program while in prison, those teaching or managing educational programs within prison, and researchers, entrepreneurs, and policy influencers.

Education Savings Accounts - The New Frontier in School Choice (Hardcover): Nat Malkus, Adam Peshek, Gerard Robinson Education Savings Accounts - The New Frontier in School Choice (Hardcover)
Nat Malkus, Adam Peshek, Gerard Robinson; Foreword by Frederick Hess
R1,698 Discovery Miles 16 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

School choice has been central to American education policy debate for a quarter-century. But throughout, school choice has been just that-school choice. In a potentially profound development, Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) reimagine parent choice in ways that may upend many assumptions that have framed issues of school choice in the past. ESAs offer something wholly new, allowing parents to customize their child's education by stitching together traditional schools and different education providers, including tutors, therapists, online and blended models. Of course, a raft of new questions and potential challenges accompany these new ESA programs, which in 2015, existed in five states-Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, Nevada and Tennessee-and were introduced by legislators in another sixteen. Yet, for all their potential import, ESAs are barely understood. This volume seeks to provide a comprehensive, fair-minded treatment of ESAs and will address the rationale for them, the challenges they pose, what it takes for them to work and the political and legal dynamics at play.

Gerard Robinson, Lillian K Moore
R2,820 Discovery Miles 28 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As concentrations of greenhouse gases and heat-trapping particles increase in the atmosphere, it is becoming ever more urgent to understand and prepare for the resulting changes in climate. These changes include not only temperature increases but also shifts in precipitation patterns, storm tracks, and other parameters. Climate change affects human health, water and energy supplies, food production, coastal communities, ecosystems, and many other aspects of society and the environment. This book presents an overview of the national strategy and progress that the federal government is taking in adapting to climate change with a focus on the progress report of the Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force.
