Glasses containing metallic nanoparticles exhibit very promising linear and nonlinear optical properties, mainly due to the surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) of the nanoparticles. The spectral position in the visible and near-infrared range and polarization dependence of the SPR arecharacteristically determined by the nanoparticles shapes.

The focus of "Ultra-Short Pulsed Laser Engineered Metal-Glass Nanocomposites" is the interaction of intense ultra-short laser pulses with glass containing silver nanoparticles embedded in soda-lime glass, and nanostructural modifications in metal-glass nanocomposites induced by such laser pulses. In order to provide a comprehensive physical picture of the processes leading to laser-induced persistent shape transformation of the nanoparticles, series of experimental results investigating the dependences of laser assisted shape modifications of nanoparticles with laser pulse intensity, excitation wavelength, temperature are considered. In addition, the resulting local optical dichroism allows producing very flexibly polarizing optical (sub-) microstructures with well-specified optical properties. The achieved considerable progress towards technological application of this technique, in particular also for long-term optical data storage, is also discussed.

New methods in immunocytochemistry and hybridization techniques enable the pathologist active in diagnosis to clarify more effectively problems in the classification and prognosis of tumors. By adopting these methods into his diagnostic repertoire it will be possible to create a closer, more productive connection between morphological diagnosis and clinical work. The methods of molecular biology, biochemistry, immunocytochem istry, and in-situ hybridization introduce new opportunities for the classification and functional characterization of cell receptors under normal conditions and for a better understanding of pathogenetic mechanisms in human diseases. Oral Pathology as part of the Head and Neck Pathology is an interdisciplinary field of science. The oral mucosa and the saliva are reflectors of many systemic diseases of the organism and therefore valuable parameters of the diagnosis and prognosis of pathological processes. In the last years many new methods have been integrated in the diagnostic repertoire. Proliferation markers are of predicitive value and characterize the biological behavior of a tumor. Markers are such as oncogenes, growth factor receptors or genetic aberrations. The importance of these new markers shall be discussed concerning the different types of oral cancers and salivary gland tumours.

This second edition is more extensive and detailed than the previous one - now a reference of two decades standing. New technical methods have increased our understanding of many tumours, and the earlier group of monomorphic adenomas has been separated for easier identification, while clearly defined tumours - even if uncommon - have their own category. With reference to their differences in prognosis and treatment, the various types of carcinomas are now listed separately, and new entities have been adopted. The inclusion of the TNM classification of salivary gland tumours together with the more detailed description of the tumour-like lesions will contribute to an even better understanding.

Die Endokrinologie hat sich aus kleinen Anfangen heraus zu einer sehr differen- zierten Spezialwissenschaft entwickelt. Ein wesentlicher AnstoB hierzu stammt aus der Erkennung endokrin bedingter Ausfallserscheinungen oder Dberfunktionen. Am Ausbau und der Begriindung der Lehre von den endokrinen Krankheiten hat die pathologische Anatomie einen wesentlichen Anteil. Kennzeichnend fiir die Entwicklung der letzten Zeit ist die starke thematische und methodische Differen- zierung der Forschung. Diese Tendenz zur Spezialisierung birgt - wie auch auf anderen Gebieten der Medizin - die Gefahr in sich, daB iiber der Analyse der Einzelphanomene die Synopsis der Befunde verlorengeht.
