Jerusalem, in her central role for Judaism, Christianity and Islam, became the setting for - or even the protagonist of - oral, written and pictorial narratives. These range from the Bible and Apocrypha, historical and hagiographical texts and legends to accounts of physical, imaginary or spiritual pilgrimage, and related images. Places in and around the city have been associated with narratives and vice versa. This collection of essays discusses the complex entanglements between Jerusalem, as a continuously redefined space, and her narratives, viewed from broad methodological and interdisciplinary perspectives. Studying the manifold ways in which narrative, space and place interact, is fundamental to the understanding of 'loca sancta traditions' and the processes of their location and translocation. Christa Wolf tried for years to find a way to write about her childhood in Nazi Germany. In her 1976 book Patterns of Childhood, she explained why it was so difficult: "Gradually, over a period of months, the dilemma has emerged: to remain speechless or to live in the third person, these seem to be the options. One is impossible, the other sinister." During 1971 and 1972 she made thirty-three attempts to start the novel, abandoning each manuscript only pages in. Eulogy for the Living, written over the course of four weeks, is the longest of those fragments. In its pages, Wolf recalls with crystalline precision the everyday details of her life as a middle-class grocer's daughter, and the struggles within the family--struggles common to most families, but exacerbated by the rise of Nazism. And as Nazism fell, the Wolfs fled west, trying to stay ahead of the rampaging Red Army. Though Wolf abandoned this account, it stands, in fragmentary form, as a testament to her skill as a thinker, storyteller, and memorializer of humanity's greatest struggles.

Following the brutal invasion and occupation of Poland, the Nazis moved swiftly to realize one of their key ideological aims, the expansion of German living space: deport Jews, bring in German settlers and subjugate the rest of the population to a selection process to separate Poles from ethnic Germans. As simple as this might have seemed initially, the various parts of the German occupation machinery soon found themselves embroiled in a bitter fight about the essence of Germanness and how to identify a German. Gerhard Wolf reveals an astonishing development in which a more inclusivist understanding of Germanness based on a more traditional notion of Volk eventually won out against one that was based on Rasse and much more exclusivist. This had important implications, as Wolf can show, as it paved the way for turning around three million Poles into German citizens. Parallel to the mass deportation and mass murder of Christian Poles and the genocide of Jewish Poles, the Nazis paradoxically thus also presided over the largest (forced) assimilation program in German history. Students and scholars of the Polish occupation, the Holocaust, and Nazism will find new analysis of German imperialism, ethnic cleansing, and genocide in this important book.

Individual remembering and forgetting is, as we know, not subject to conscious intention, but is part of a collective process of remembering which is formed in part by cultural change. Thus a ~memory writinga (TM) is dependent far more on the effects of narrative and linguistic models than directed by historical truth. German Studies have approached this topic, which has been reignited through the controversies surrounding the Nazi past of prominent authors. The present volume documents the intensive discussions conducted on the subject at the Annual German Studies Conference held in Marburg in 2007.

Extensive chronicles have been handed down from the Middle Ages, preserving and interpreting stories of the past and present in literary form. Their sheer numbers pose a challenge to researchers. This handbook systematically presents the most important medieval chronicles in terms of their conception and function. They offer the reader initial access to these unjustly neglected texts.

The series "QUELLEN UND FORSCHUNGEN ZUR LITERATUR- UND KULTURGESCHICHTE" (Sources and Research in the History of Literature and Culture), with a rich tradition stretching back to 1874, is an established feature among the renowned publications for German Literary Studies. Edited by Ernst Osterkamp and Werner Roecke at the Humboldt University of Berlin, the series presents examples of high-quality scholarship examining literary texts in conjunction with historical cultural phenomena, particularly with the other arts. There is an explicit demand for literary studies with a transdisciplinary approach. German literature from the Middle Ages to the present day forms the main focus of the series. As the historical cultural thrust of the series includes aspects of intercultural experience and national perceptions of the other, Quellen und Forschungen is also open to occasional comparative studies. The publications of the series include monographs, doctoral and professorial theses and thematically focused volumes of collected papers. Works presented for acceptance in the series are required to display scholarly relevance and excellence in method and presentation.

Der Tagungsband dokumentiert die Diskussion zentraler Probleme des am 6. Juni 1997 vom polnischen Parlament verabschiedeten Strafverfahrensgesetzbuches. Die Analyse der Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den Strafverfahrensgesetzb chern der beiden L nder ist vor allem deshalb lohnend, weil die neue polnische Kodifikation zahlreiche Regelungen enth lt, die zwar in Deutschland ebenfalls diskutiert bzw. praktiziert werden, in der Strafprozessordnung aber (noch) fehlen.

Der Band dokumentiert die Ergebnisse einer Tagung zur Rechtsstellung eines auslandischen Beschuldigten vor polnischen Gerichten. Damit bildet das Buch spiegelbildlich das Gegenstuck zu der als Band 3 der Reihe erschienenen Publikation "Auslander vor deutschen Gerichten." Das Verfahren gegen auslandische Beschuldigte kann als Testfall fur die Rechtsstaatlichkeit, aber auch die praktische Handhabbarkeit des Strafverfahrensrechts im Alltag gelten. Im Vordergrund stehen Probleme der sprachlichen Verstandigung und einer ausreichenden Verteidigung des Beschuldigten. Daruber hinaus werden vor allem auch die im polnischen Recht vorgesehenen verfahrensrechtlichen Besonderheiten sowie die Moglichkeiten der Ubernahme und Ubergabe der Strafvollstreckung eingehend behandelt."

Das Ergebnis ist eine Fulle Materials aus der Arbeit des Grenzschutzes, des Zolls, der Polizei, der Staatsanwaltschaften und der Gerichte beiderseits der Grenze. Die Referate geben einen UEberblick uber die drastische Zunahme der Kriminalitat in der Region seit Anfang der 90er Jahre, uber die Ursachen fur diesen Anstieg und uber die Chancen fur eine wirksamere Bekampfung der Kriminalitat im Grenzgebiet.

Maren sind schon langst nicht mehr ein Stiefkind der Forschung. Dennoch geben ihre Widerspruchlichkeiten, moralische Devianz und interpretative Offenheit immer noch Ratsel auf. Dieser Sammelband setzt gerade an den Spannungen der Marendichtung an und versucht auf dieser Basis, ihre literarische Funktion systematisch zu bestimmen. Dabei fungiert der Begriff der Grenze als gemeinsamer Fokus der einzelnen Beitrage: Maren operieren gezielt an den Grenzen hoefischer und stadtischer Literatur, sie uberschreiten diese und machen sie damit erst sichtbar. In 2019, Wolfgang Laib entered into a dialogue with masterpieces by Fra Angelico, Leon Battista Alberti, Filippo Brunelleschi and Benozzo Gozzoli in his philosophical and poetic installations of pollen and beeswax. The publication documents impressively this unique and spectacular art event. Following an invitation from the Museo Novecento in Florence, Wolfgang Laib - one of the outstanding artists of the present day - created five works in four of the city's main sights, including the convent of San Marco and the Pazzi Chapel. In their juxtaposition with the historic masterpieces, the delicate pollen sculptures and the imposing beeswax ziggurat cause the contrast between present and past, physical place and endless space, and real and spiritual life to become blurred and lead us towards the central questions of life.
