Churches and Religion in the Second World War (Hardcover, New): Jan Bank, Lieve Gevers Churches and Religion in the Second World War (Hardcover, New)
Jan Bank, Lieve Gevers
R4,080 Discovery Miles 40 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite the wealth of historical literature on the Second World War, the subject of religion and churches in occupied Europe has been undervalued - until now. This critical European history is unique in delivering a rich and detailed analysis of churches and religion during the Second World War, looking at the Christian religions of occupied Europe: Catholicism, Lutheranism, Calvinism, and Orthodoxy. The authors engage with key themes such as relations between religious institutions and the occupying forces; religion as a key factor in national identity and resistance; theological answers to the Fascist and National Socialist ideologies, especially in terms of the persecution of the Jews; Christians as bystanders or protectors in the Holocaust; and religious life during the war. Churches and Religion in the Second World War will be of great value to students and scholars of European history, the Second World War and religion and theology.

Africa's Role and Contribution to International Criminal Justice (Paperback): Jeremy Sarkin, Ellah Siang'andu Africa's Role and Contribution to International Criminal Justice (Paperback)
Jeremy Sarkin, Ellah Siang'andu; Contributions by Jeremy Sarkin, Ellah Siang'andu, Lydia Nkansah, …
R2,246 Discovery Miles 22 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores a range of issues related to the development, application and enforcement of international criminal justice within Africa and on Africa. Written by experts from Africa, and adopting African perspectives, this book seeks to understand the scope and reach of these issues, nationally, regionally and globally. Africa's Role and Contribution to International Criminal Justice engages in theoretical and policy discourses on the substantive and procedural features of criminal law and justice in the African context. A range of topical issues are examined by the contributors, such as the ways in which African states have dealt with issues of universal jurisdiction and how victims are treated, as well as controversial questions concerning how courts function and should function in dealing with these issues. The ideas, themes, institutions, practices, concepts and patterns of convergence of criminal justice systems in Africa are also explored. This book aims to establish a greater understanding of international criminal justice and its relation to Africa, and beyond. Further, it seeks to expand the conversation beyond the narrow topics that are so commonly discussed when matters of African criminal justice are considered.

Entertaining Lesbians - Celebrity, Sexuality, and Self-Invention (Hardcover): Martha Gever Entertaining Lesbians - Celebrity, Sexuality, and Self-Invention (Hardcover)
Martha Gever
R4,561 Discovery Miles 45 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Before Rosie and k.d. lang, lesbians were seen only obliquely on the screen-as shadowy spinsters with twisted desires. Times have changed and today's famous lesbians are popular icons. Entertaining Lesbians charts the rise of lesbian celebrity, asking whether such exposure is good for lesbians or hurts their cause. Stars from Ellen DeGeneres to Melissa Etheridge to Chastity Bono send a message that being out is now acceptable, but have they created new stereotypes along the way? Tackling both sides of the issue, Gever traces the history of lesbians in public life over the last century to explore the paradoxes inherent in gay celebrity. Visibility, she contends, has always been the key weapon in the gay and lesbian movement's arsenal: To be out is to be represented. But lesbian celebrities like Newt Gingrich's sister Candace also demonstrate the risk of backlash and the burden of media scrutiny. Despite the pitfalls, Gever shows how stars like Martina Navratilova have created powerful models for the next generation with careful image management. Original and provocative, Entertaining Lesbians takes a groundbreaking look at the peril and promise of being not just out of the closet, but out in the public eye.

Michel Gevers, Gang Li
R2,817 Discovery Miles 28 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is all about finite wordlength errors in digital filters, con trollers and estimators, and how to minimize the deleterious effects of these errors on the performance of these devices. This does by no means imply that all about finite wordlength errors in filters, controllers and estimators is to be found in this book. We first ventured into the world of finite wordlength effects in 1987 when Gang Li began his PhD thesis in this area. Our more experienced readers might well say 'This shows', but we believe that the extent of our new contributions largely offsets our relative inexperience about the subject that might surface here and there in the book. Our naive view on the subject of finite wordlength errors in 1987 could probably be summarized as follows: * numerical errors due to finite wordlength encoding and roundoff are something that one has to live with, and there is probably not much that can be done about them except to increase the wordlength by improvements on the hardware; * these errors are as old as finite arithmetic and numerical analysis and they must therefore be well understood by now; * thus, if something can be done to minimize their effects, it must have been analysed and put into practice a long time ago. It is almost fair to say that we were wrong on all counts.

R1,442 Discovery Miles 14 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The course of history is never one of smooth progression. Periods of relative quietness are interrupted by periods of wars and revolution. This pattern resembles that of a river which, before flowing into the delta, has to pass countless rapids. The same holds for the development of the science of medicine. In obstetrics some of these 'revolutions' or 'rapids' consist of the introduction of conservative obstetrical treatment by Lucas Johann Boer at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the discovery of the cause of puerperal sepsis by Oliver Wendell Holmes and Semmelweiss between 1843 and 1847, the introduction of the principle of asepsis by Pasteur in 1874, the introduction of prenatal care at the end of the nine teenth and the beginning of the twentieth century (Mijnlieff, Treub, De Snoo), the improvement of surgical techniques, the possibility to treat shock by bloodtransfusion, and, finally, the acquisition of new means for the effective therapy of infection. All these developments have led to a sharp reduction of maternal and perinatal mortality. In this connection it must be pointed out that such a reduction could never have been accomplished without the favourable social changes as a result of which medical and prenatal care could be made universally available. In recent years there has been another revolutionary develop ment in obstetrics. Two factors have been responsible for this: the ap plication of basic sciences in obstetrics, and the dissolution of the isolation with respect to other clinical disciplines."

Much as Che Guevara's book Guerilla Warfare helped define and delineate a new type of warfare in the wake of the Cuban revolution in 1961, Cyber Guerilla will help define the new types of threats and fighters now appearing in the digital landscape. Cyber Guerilla provides valuable insight for infosec professionals and consultants, as well as government, military, and corporate IT strategists who must defend against myriad threats from non-state actors. The authors take readers inside the operations and tactics of cyber guerillas, who are changing the dynamics of cyber warfare and information security through their unconventional strategies and threats. This book draws lessons from the authors' own experiences but also from illustrative hacker groups such as Anonymous, LulzSec and Rebellious Rose.

Edited by Jack Dann (World Fantasy Award-winning co-editor of Dreaming Down Under) and Nick Gevers (acclaimed editor and book reviewer), Ghosts by Gaslight is a showcase collection of all-new stories of steampunk and supernatural suspense by modern masters of horror, fantasy, sf, and the paranormal. An absolutely mind-boggling gathering of some of today's very best dark storytellers--including Peter Beagle, James Morrow, Sean Williams, Gene Wolfe, Garth Nix, Marly Youmans, Jeffery Ford, and Robert Silverberg--Ghosts by Gaslight offers chilling gothic and spectral tales in a delightfully twisted Victorian and Edwardian vein. Think Henry James's Turn of the Screw and Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with a decidedly steampunk edge, and you're ready to confront Ghosts by Gaslight.
