Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are wireless communication networks organized in a mesh topology with radio capabilities. These networks can self-form and self-heal and are not restricted to a specific technology or communication protocol. They provide flexible yet reliable connectivity that cellular networks cannot deliver. Thanks to technological advances in machine learning, software defined radio, UAV/UGV, big data, IoT and smart cities, wireless mesh networks have found much renewed interest for communication network applications. This book presents a simple, yet complete, approach to the design and performance analysis of distributed processing algorithms and techniques suitable for IEEE 802.15.4 networks. In particular, the book focuses on the bottom two layers of the ISO/OSI stack (Physical and Medium Access Control), discussing also a few issue related to routing. This book focuses on the analysis and design of low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded modulations, which are becoming part of several current and future communication systems, such as high-throughput terrestrial and satellite wireless networks. In this book, a two-sided perspective on the design of LDPC coded systems is proposed, encompassing both code/modulation optimization (transmitter side) and detection algorithm design (receiver side). After introducing key concepts on error control coding, in particular LDPC coding, and detection techniques, the book presents several relevant applications. More precisely, by using advanced performance evaluation techniques, such as extrinsic information transfer charts, the optimization of coded modulation schemes are considered for (i) memoryless channels, (ii) dispersive and partial response channels, and (iii) concatenated systems including differential encoding. This book is designed to be used by graduate students working in the field of communication theory, with particular emphasis on LDPC coded communication schemes, and industry experts working on related fields.

This book constitutes the refereed proceeding of the 6th International Conference on Coordination Models and Languages, COORDINATION 2004, held in Pisa, Italy in February 2004.

The 20 revised full papers presented together with the abstracts of 3 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 72 submissions. Among the topics addressed are context-aware coordination, the Linda coordination model, component adaptation, aspect-oriented programming, coordination middleware, peer-to-peer systems, coordination languages, network coordination, logic based coordination, agent coordination, as well as several coordination tools.

This Festschrift volume is published in honor of Pierpaolo Degano on the occasion of his 65th birthday and is the outcome of a colloquium held in Pisa, Italy, in June 2015. Pierpaolo Degano has worked on a large variety of topics including formal program semantics, concurrency theory, systems biology and security. The volume contains 22 refereed papers and one extended abstract, including personal memoirs and regular research papers by close collaborators and friends and a laudatio illustrating his distinguished career and his main scientific contributions. The papers deal with the main research topics explored by Pierpaolo Degano and those still under his investigation.
