This book focuses on the analysis and design of low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded modulations, which are becoming part of several current and future communication systems, such as high-throughput terrestrial and satellite wireless networks. In this book, a two-sided perspective on the design of LDPC coded systems is proposed, encompassing both code/modulation optimization (transmitter side) and detection algorithm design (receiver side). After introducing key concepts on error control coding, in particular LDPC coding, and detection techniques, the book presents several relevant applications. More precisely, by using advanced performance evaluation techniques, such as extrinsic information transfer charts, the optimization of coded modulation schemes are considered for (i) memoryless channels, (ii) dispersive and partial response channels, and (iii) concatenated systems including differential encoding. This book is designed to be used by graduate students working in the field of communication theory, with particular emphasis on LDPC coded communication schemes, and industry experts working on related fields.

This Festschrift volume is published in honor of Pierpaolo Degano on the occasion of his 65th birthday and is the outcome of a colloquium held in Pisa, Italy, in June 2015. Pierpaolo Degano has worked on a large variety of topics including formal program semantics, concurrency theory, systems biology and security. The volume contains 22 refereed papers and one extended abstract, including personal memoirs and regular research papers by close collaborators and friends and a laudatio illustrating his distinguished career and his main scientific contributions. The papers deal with the main research topics explored by Pierpaolo Degano and those still under his investigation.

The focus of this book is on performance optimization in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), aimed at achieving, through proper design of physical and Medium Access Control (MAC) layers, energy savings and/or increased throughput. Four scenarios of interest are considered: (i) WSNs for target detection in surveillance applications; (ii) power allocation strategies for WSN lifetime maximization; (iii) throughput and lifetime maximization in clustered WSNs; and (iv) integration of radio control technology (namely, RFID) in Zigbee WSNs for high energy efficiency. In each scenario, an analytical model for performance characterization is presented, together with simulation results. The analytical and simulation-based performance optimization perspectives provide useful insights for effective WSN configuration.
