BBC feature drama adapted from Jane Austen's classic novel. When Catherine Moorland (Katharine Schlesinger), a young woman who enjoys reading Gothic novels, visits Bath with friends of the family, she meets the charming Henry Tilney (Peter Firth) and later befriends him and his sister, Eleanor (Ingrid Lacey). They invite her to their home, the mysterious Northanger Abbey, but, so engrossed in the books she reads, Catherine is certain the Abbey will be full of intrigue which leads her to imagine a fantastical story about the death of Henry's mother. After revealing her thoughts to Henry, Catherine fears she may have lost his affections forever.

Lockwood stars as Lady Skelton, an aristocrat who attempts to relieve the tedium of her day-to-day life by secretly acting as a highway robber. Lady Skelton soon finds herself caught up in a tangled web of romance, danger, and jealousy. In 'Love Story' (1944), Lissa (Lockwood) discovers she only has a short time to live, so travels to Cornwall for a final fling. While there, she falls in love with young mineral prospector, Kit (Stewart Granger). However, the course of true love does not run smoothly. In 'Bank Holiday' (1938), a group of people set off on an August bank holiday, including a raucous Cockney family, a would-be beauty queen, and two young lovers - whose relationship starts to come apart when one has to deal with a bereavement at the hospital where she works. In 'Give Us the Moon' (1944), a young man, Sascha (Vic Oliver), joins a group called 'The Elephants' whose principle is to abide by a complete disregard for work. However chaos ensues when the group decides to help run the hotel owned by Sascha's father. In 'Highly Dangerous' (1950), when British Intelligence discovers that an Iron Curtain country is developing insects as weapons, they dispatch entomologist Frances Gray (Lockwood) to get into the country and collect specimens. However her cover is almost immediately blown on her arrival and her contact is murdered. Finally, in 'The Lady Vanishes' (1938), when the elderly Miss Froy (Dame May Whitty) goes missing on a train bound for England, her friend Iris Henderson (Lockwood) sets out to find her. However, Iris' attempts are immediately frustrated by her fellow passengers, who question whether Miss Froy ever even existed. Only music scholar Gilbert Redman (Michael Redgrave) is prepared to believe Iris, and together they set about getting to the bottom of the mystery.

A collection of six BBC dramatisations of Jane Austen classics. Adapted by Andrew Davies after his success with his work on George Elliot's 'Middlemarch' for television, 'Pride and Prejudice' was the BBC's flagship drama in the schedule for autumn 1995. The story revolves around the arrival of the wealthy Mr Darcy (Colin Firth) and party and the excitement he causes amongst the five daughters of the Bennett family. In 'Persuasion' (1995), Anne Elliott (Amanda Root) has spent years regretting her rejection of Captain Wentworth's (Ciaran Hinds) proposal of marriage. When he returns from sea they meet, but instead of finding romance are kept apart through a series of misunderstandings. Anne is being pursued by her cousin, Mr Elliott (Samuel West), while Captain Wentworth is now regarded as a very eligible bachelor. 'Northanger Abbey' (1986) stars Peter Firth and Robert Hardy. The story follows the adventures of Catherine Moorland (Katharine Schlesinger), who is invited by the romantic Henry Tilney to stay at the Abbey - and finds it to be shrouded in mystery and intrigue. In 'Sense and Sensibility' (1980), sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood (Irene Richard and Tracey Childs) lose their family fortune to spiteful relatives, and are forced to seek out suitable husbands in order to survive. While Marianne falls for the heartless John Willoughby (Peter Woodward), Elinor finds herself attracted to Edward Ferrars (Bosco Hogan) - who is himself betrothed to Lucy Steele (Julia Chambers). In 'Mansfield Park' (1983), Fanny Price (Sylvestra Le Touzel) struggles to adjust to her new aristrocratic lifestyle when she is sent by her debt-ridden mother to live with her rich aunt and cousins. Her 'superior' relatives constantly ignore her, and only her cousin Edmund (Nicholas Farrell) shows Fanny any interest. However, Fanny's charm and wit eventually win her many potential suitors, and before long she has to decide whether she wishes to wed for love or for status. Doran Godwin stars in 'Emma' (1972), which tells the stroy of the eponymous heroine whose chief joy in life is organising the lives of the friends with whom she surrounds herself. She is soon the apple of Mr Knightly (John Carson)'s eye, an older family friend who has watched her grow and advised her on many things in life.

A collection of classic films starring British comic actor, Will Hay. In 'Ask A Policeman' (1939), the police force of crime-free Turnbotham Round consists of Sergeant Dudfoot (Hay) and officers Harbottle (Moore Marriott) and Albert (Graham Moffatt). When the commissioner suggests that they are no longer neccessary, they set about engineering a crime wave in the village, so that they can be seen to be solving it. Their attempts fail, until they stumble upon a genuine case of smuggling. In 'Boys Will be Boys' (1935), prison teacher Dr Smart-Alec (Hay) steps up the career ladder to become headmaster of Narkover public school, but his innate stupidity soon begins to create havoc. Will Hay dons a mortarboard on screen for the first time, in the bumbling headmaster role that was to become his trademark. In 'Oh, Mr Porter!', bungling (1937), station master William Porter (Hay) is appointed to the run down station of Buggleskelly in Ireland by the resentful Superintendent. When he charters an early morning train for a sinister one-eyed man, his staff, Harbottle (Marriott) and Albert (Moffatt) are suspicious. They investigate, and discover that arms smugglers are using a deserted railway tunnel as a base. In 'Convict 99' (1939), disgraced teacher Benjamin Twist (Hay) finds himself put in charge of a prison for hardened criminals when he is mistaken for a tough prison governor. When he celebrates by getting drunk, Twist ends up behinds bars himself. In 'Old Bones Of The River' (1938), when Professor Benjamin Tibbets (Hay) travels to Africa up river to open schools for the natives, he experiences several setbacks. His new pupils are less than receptive, and when the commander of the local base goes down with malaria he takes on his duties as well. Aided by the crew of the boat on which he arrived (Marriott and Moffatt), he sets about collecting taxes from the locals, with hilarious results. In 'Where There's a Will' (1936), alcoholic lawyer Benjamin Stubbins (Hay) is deep in debt. He finds himself being used by a gang of crooks to pull off a bank robbery, but manages to foil their scheme. In 'Good Morning Boys' (1937), the headmaster of St Michael's school Dr Benjamin Twist (Hay) finds himself in hot water after a government inspection. He is asked to resign unless he can prove that his educational methods work, and so when he comes into possession of the French paper, he does not need much coaxing before showing it to his students. The boys pass with honours, but a congratulatory trip to Paris goes awry when they and Twist inadvertently help to steal the Mona Lisa. In 'Hey! Hey! USA' (1938), Dr Benjamin Twist (Hay) is invited to act as tutor to the son of a millionaire in the United States of America, after posing as a famous professor. Twist discovers that two gangs of villains are out to kidnap his precocious young pupil, Bernie Schultz. Finally, in 'Windbag the Sailor' (1936), Ben Cutlet (Hay) is a bogus old sea dog who finds himself tricked into taking command of an unseaworthy vessel. Its owners intend to sink the ship and cash in the insurance. When Cutlet's crew mutiny, he is forced to escape with cabin boy Albert (Moffatt) and the aged Harbottle (Marriott).
