Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
THE PRACTICAL KENNEL GUIDE WITH PLAIN INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO REAR
AND BREED DOGS FOR PLEASURE, SHOW, AND PROFIT By Gordon Stables.
M.D. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT Originally published in
1875, this extremely scarce early work on dog breeding and showing,
is both expensive and hard to find in any edition. VINTAGE DOG
BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and engravings,
as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was a well
known dog man who wrote this book with the benefit of his many
years experience in breeding and showing. Much of the information
published here was previously little known to the dog world and was
warmly welcomed, especially by show dog enthusiasts. It's two
hundred and four pages consist of nineteen comprehensive chapters,
each nicely illustrated with early engravings: Origins of the
Different Breeds. - Words and Phrases used in the Fancy. - First
Lessons in Caniology. - The Points of Field Dogs. - The Points of
Guard Dogs. - The Points of Terriers. - The Points of Toy or Fancy
Dogs. - The Points of Utility and Working Dogs. - Hints on
Purchasing Dogs. - Management of Stud Dogs. - Management of Show
Dogs. - "Faking," and Tricks of the Show Ring. - Breeding for
Pleasure and Profit. - Discussions on the Breeds. - A Breeder's and
Exhibitors Non-Sporting Kennel. - Dogs and the Law. Etc. This is a
fascinating insight to the early world of dogs and dog shows, and
will prove of great interest to all dog lovers and historians of
the various breeds. It also contains much information that is still
useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books,
particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now
extremely scarceand increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are
republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality,
modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
SABLE AND WHITE - THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A SHOW COLLIE By Gordon
Stables A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT This moving but
charming novel of a collie's turbulent life, was first published in
1893. It is now both expensive and very hard to find in its first
edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original
text and beautiful engravings and illustrations by Harrison Weir
and Miss Winifred Austen. "Luath" is a sable and white collie of
excellent parentage. His story is told in the first person. It
takes the reader through his doggie life with its idyllic puppy
days, then on through many terrible experiences, interspersed with
some happier adventures, to his eventual retirement. A series of
owners, some kind, some cruel, use him for both gain and pleasure.
From the show benches of that era, to the sad world of lost dogs,
life with the gypsies and numerous other escapades, our hero, oft
accompanied by his Pug chum, Jim, tells a thrilling tale of a dogs
life in Victorian England. This lengthy work consists of two
hundred and seventy nine pages illustrated with vintage engravings.
It will prove a fascinating read for all dog lovers, and especially
for the collie enthusiast. "And the dog is still the faithful,
Still the loving friend of man; Ever ready at his bidding, Doing
for him all he can." Many of the earliest dog books, particularly
those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce
and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing
these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions,
using the original text and artwork.
