Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
In a nation reinventing itself following victory in World War II,
Nashville’s self-portrait blended old with new. New businesses
and skyscrapers, a shopping mall, the Interstate system, school
integration, and other changes would ultimately bring Nashville
into line with the direction of the nation at large, but alongside
nationwide trends were treasures unique to the city: Fair Park for
thrill-seekers, Sulphur Dell for baseball fans, the Grand Ole Opry
at the Ryman for music, and the Maxwell House for visitors still
arriving through Union Station and now from the air at Berry Field.
In this companion volume to Historic Photos of
Nashville, Ashley Driggs Haugen leads a tour past many
Nashville landmarks from the recent past, reminiscing with
Nashvillians who can remember and informing those new to the city
who may not. Nearly 200 images reproduced in vivid black-and-white
show the Opry at the Ryman, construction of the L&C Tower, 100
Oaks Mall, the Municipal Auditorium, Harveys Department Store
downtown, and countless other subjects from yesteryear that remain
key to the city’s past and present.
At a time when surfing is more popular than ever, it's fitting to
look back at the years that brought the sport into the mainstream.
Developed by Hawaiian Islanders over five centuries ago, surfing
began to peak on the mainland in the 1950s-becoming not just a
sport, but a way of life, admired and exported across the globe.
One of the key image-makers from that period is LeRoy Grannis, a
surfer since 1931, who began photographing the longboard era of the
early 1960s in both California and Hawaii. This edition brings back
Grannis's hair-raising, sold-out Collector's Edition, curated from
the photographer's personal archives, to showcase his most vibrant
work in a compact and affordable format-from the bliss of catching
the perfect wave at San Onofre to dramatic wipeouts at Oahu's famed
North Shore. An innovator in the field, Grannis suction-cupped a
waterproof box to his board, enabling him to change film in the
water and stay closer to the action than any other photographer of
the time. He also covered the emerging surf lifestyle, from "surfer
stomps" and hordes of fans at surf contests to board-laden woody
station wagons along the Pacific Coast Highway. It is in these
iconic images that a sport still in its adolescence embodied the
free-spirited nature of an era-a time before shortboards and
celebrity endorsements, when surfing was at its bronzed best.
Have you ever wondered what adventures fill a young child's
imagination whilst they are sleeping? Join Jack on his exhilarating
trip around the world! From a truck, to a bus, to a plane and
eventually to a space rocket, Jack has the most exciting and
fascinating journeys where he makes lots of new friends along the
way. How does a little boy go from being tucked up safely in bed to
travelling across countries and continents, to making deliveries,
to making friends on holiday, to seeing the Queen AND Santa Claus,
to eating food with chopsticks and - eventually - flying to the
moon? With illustrations by Ian R. Ward, this is an uplifting
storytelling experience that will fill their imaginations with
wonder and curiosity. Granny Jean writes a narrative bursting with
detail that children aged 4 - 7 will want to hear again and again!
Where do neighborhoods come from and why do certain resources
and effects--such as social capital and collective efficacy--bundle
together in some neighborhoods and not in others? "From the Ground
Up" argues that neighborhood communities emerge from neighbor
networks, and shows that these social relations are unique because
of particular geographic qualities. Highlighting the linked
importance of geography and children to the emergence of
neighborhood communities, Rick Grannis models how neighboring
progresses through four stages: when geography allows individuals
to be conveniently available to one another; when they have passive
contacts or unintentional encounters; when they actually initiate
contact; and when they engage in activities indicating trust or
shared norms and values.
Seamlessly integrating discussions of geography, household
characteristics, and lifestyle, Grannis demonstrates that
neighborhood communities exhibit dynamic processes throughout the
different stages. He examines the households that relocate in order
to choose their neighbors, the choices of interactions that
develop, and the exchange of beliefs and influence that impact
neighborhood communities over time. Grannis also introduces and
explores two geographic concepts--t-communities and street
islands--to capture the subtle features constraining residents'
perceptions of their environment and community.
Basing findings on thousands of interviews conducted through
door-to-door canvassing in the Los Angeles area as well as other
neighborhood communities, "From the Ground Up" reveals the
different ways neighborhoods function and why these differences
matter.
