Whether stargazing with the naked eye or observing deep space with
the largest telescopes in the world, humans have a seemingly
neverending fascination with the stars. Our ancestors saw patterns
in their random arrangement, inventing both tales of legendary
heroes and the pastime of dot-to-dot in one fell swoop. But it's
only in the last century or so that the natures of these distant
lights have been revealed - and it's more incredible than any
legend. How are stars born? How long do they live? And just how
many times can you read the word 'trillion' before it starts
sounding made up? Find out as astronomer Dr Greg Brown of Royal
Observatory Greenwich takes a short diversion from obsessing over
black holes to illuminate us about the lives of stars - ending in
black holes, naturally.
A gaggle of stellar singers and musicians from Minnesota's
roots-rock label Red House Records convened to record quiet songs
written by the likes of Nanci Griffith, Tom Waits, Mary Chapin
Carpenter, Neil Young, Billy Joel, Carole King, Bruce Cockburn,
Jesse Winchester, Don Henley, and Steve Earle. Mireille Levert's
amusingly fantastical illustrations focus on the whimsical title
track penned by Greg Brown and performed by all of the singers. The
whole project has a warm, rich, soulful sound.
Trailer Records is proud to release the recording that Greg Brown's
fans have been waiting for; a cd of traditional folk tunes filtered
through Brown's distinct musical perspective. "Honey In The Lion's
Head" also features guest appearances by long-time producer Bo
Ramsey, new wife Iris Dement, daughter and Trailer Records artist
Pieta Brown, and many of the Iowa City bluegrass players who have
appeared on Greg's releases over the years. Featuring such classic
songs as: "Samson and Delilah," "On Top Of Old Smokey," and
"Jacob's Ladder," "Honey In The Lion's Head" is two-time
Grammy-nominee Brown's second release for hometown indie label
Trailer Records.
