We follow the road over the bridge, underneath which runs a fast-flowing mountain river, then through the village of shops, their souvenirs and foodstuffs almost spilling onto the street, and reach the stairs to Ryushaku-ji. We climb and then follow a wide path. There, after various shrines, we find statues of Basho and his companion Sora, visitors to this temple mountain in 1689. Between them stands a stone monument inscribed in kanji, the Oku No Hosomichi poem he later wrote about his ascent here. It is a powerful poem uniting the stillness of the rock with the sound of the cicada (or semi, as it is known in Japan) as each penetrates consciousness itself. We are following his footsteps more than three hundred years later and more than half-a-world away from home, approaching closer his spirit of natural harmony.

Mike Buckley, no good son of an alcoholic convict father, gets kicked out of his home by his Mom for his second DUI in three months. As he sits in the park wondering where he is going to stay, an old acquaintance sees him. After hearing he has no place to stay she invites him to stay with her and her mother. He agrees.
While staying there he meets Granny Adams, the wealthy widow living next door. After finding out how much money she has, Buckley decides to try and get some of it for himself. His plan is to get friendly with her, and when the opportunity arises, force her to withdraw $50,000 from her bank, then take her back to her house, tie her up, and leave the area.
But his plan backfires when, at the bank, Granny struggles to get free and Buckley shoots her. He then turns the gun on Glenn Preston, the only other customer in the bank. But Preston is too fast for him. They struggle for the gun and Glenn overpowers Buckley. He gets the gun and holds Buckley at gunpoint until the police arrive.
Shortly, Officer Mike Crawford, son of Police Chief Earl Crawford, arrives at the bank and rushes in with his gun drawn. Buckley shouts out 'shoot him, he just shot that old woman." Without warning Crawford shoots twice, striking Preston.
Granny dies at the scene. Preston is critically injured. Officer Crawford is declared a hero. Mike Buckley slips away after being questioned by detectives.
When Chief Crawford learns the truth he does everything in his power to see that his son remains a hero, and to protect himself, his department, and his town's dirty secrets. Along the way evidence is destroyed, as are people who get too close to the truth.
