Planning is described as being increasingly sidelined by the
impacts of neo-liberal restructuring. At the same time, 'culture'
is nowadays seen as the world's key intellectual resource
possessing new creative weight in sociological, economic and
environmental terms. This book argues that, in the light of this
cultural turn, there is the opportunity to re-position planning and
proposes an original, practical and robust system of
'culturisation'. Culturisation is defined as the ethical, critical
and reflexive integration of culture into planning and potentially
other areas such as public administration, corporate strategy and
development thinking. Cultural theory, planning theory, global
governance policy and recent, innovative culturised practices are
all explored to this end. The new theoretical and practical
approach put forward shows how deeper, richer and more relevant
ideas about culture can be utilized in planning, and is illustrated
with international examples and two major case studies detailing
new vistas for a refurbished planning.

In the 1950s the West Indies cricket team announced its arrival as
a dominant force, beating England in a Test series for the first
time on English soil. Remarkably, the tiny Caribbean island of
Barbados produced the five most successful West Indies batsmen of
the era, the most famous of whom were the 'Three Ws'. Born within
walking distance of each other and delivered by the same midwife,
Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Clyde Walcott made
their Test debuts within three weeks of each other and played Test
cricket together for over nine years. The Three Ws were the
founding fathers of modern West Indian cricket and were pivotal in
developing modern world cricket. In recognition of Barbados
recently celebrating its fiftieth anniversary of independence, this
book examines the historical importance of cricket to the island's
culture, looks at the factors that led to the island becoming a
powerful influence in West Indies cricket and pays tribute to the
cricketers who made Barbados famous in its pre-independence days.
Greg Young: for decades, always moving, always moving on. Traveler,
seeker, escape artist: from or to Texas, the Navy, Seattle, India,
NYC, Korea, Honolulu, Germany. Passionately into stonework,
surfing, alcohol, drumming, meditation, THC, teaching, Santeria.
Fits and starts; restarts. Countless departures, arrivals. Moments
of debauchery; of heartfelt appreciation; of enlightenment.
Recidivist heart-breaker, breaker of his own heart. Self-saboteur.
But, in the arc of Coal Fire's resolutely confessional telling,
cleansed by the life-saving rigor of endeavoring to shape true
narrative. To let story hold him accountable. And now, age
fifty-something, so very far from where he began, composing this
story (and thus himself) on the windswept coast of Wales. WALES
--of all the places he's been, could have been, could still be. At
long last home, if (of course) restless still. But, for this
redemptive moment, saved by his art. And by love: received; given.
