When Sir Walter, Sir Benedict and the other knights go to nearby
Roses Castle for a tournament, the enemy knights from Malice attack
Flamant. The only hope of rescue lies in getting a message to Sir
Benedict, a day's ride away. But the castle is surrounded and
there's no way out! With the help of her friends, Tommy devises a
daring plan. Can she save Flamant Castle before it's too late?
It's Lady Beatrix's birthday, and Sir Walter is planning a
celebration at Flamant Castle. There will be games and competitions
and a big surprise party. Everyone at the castle is excited .
except the pigeon. But the pigeon is needed for a very special job
- and when he goes missing, it looks like Sir Walter's plans will
be ruined. Can Tommy find her friend and save the celebrations?
It's night and the dark is filled with strange sounds as Shane
makes his way home. On a fence he finds a stray cat that at first
growls and spits at him. But Shane talks and strokes the kitten to
calmness, and decides to take the 'Spitfire, Kitten Number One,'
home with him. No gang of boys, or avenue of dense traffic, or
fierce dog can stop Shane carrying his new found friend to the
place he calls home. Greg Rogers' sensitive use of charcoal and
pastel create Shane and his cat in splendid city-at-night time
scenes.
While on an errand to the smith in the town, Tommy overhears a plot
to poison Sir Walter during a banquet and make it look like the
work of a neighbouring nobleman. Tommy must foil the plot or
Flamant Castle will be at war.Introducing a feisty new character
for girls (and their parents and teachers) who love adventure and
want an alternative to 'pink' books. Created by Frances Watts, a
CBCA Award Winner and author of the huge bestseller Kisses for
Daddy.
A trickster is turning life at Flamant Castle upside down. Someone
has put sneezing powder in the knights' soup and itching powder in
Sir Walter's sheets and changed the salt for sugar in Mrs Moon's
kitchen. At first the tricks seem funny, but Sir Benedict is not
amused. He thinks the trickster is Tommy - and unless the tricks
stop, he will send her away from the castle! Can she find out who
the real trickster is before she is banished forever?
Flamant Castle is having a tournament! But when one of the squires
is injured during practice, Sir Benedict asks Tommy to take his
place. He even offers her one of his own horses to ride. It's a
dream come true for Tommy. There's just one problem: she has never
ridden a horse before - and every time she tries to ride Bess, the
horse throws her off! Time is running out. How will Tommy be able
to compete?

What unites these essays is a common focus on the 'social
construction' of racial categories and a desire to expose the
exercise of racism and its intersection with other forms of social
domination such as class, gender, and ethnicity . . .
Fascinating."--Multicultural Review""The coming together of
theoretical, multiethnic, and 'on-the-ground' perspectives makes
this book a particularly valuable contribution to the discourse on
race."--Paula Giddings""Timely and thoughtful. . . contributes to
our understanding of how race operates as a social process and in
the contextualization of power and status."--Contemporary
Sociology""A treasure chest full of gems. Virtually every article
is fascinating and important, and as a collection, its impact is
tremendous. Neo-conservative myths and fantasies fall like
nine-pins before its well-researched and tightly argued
papers."--Martin Bernal, author of Black Athena""A timely antidote
to that reaction tome, The Bell Curve."--Daily News (New
York)""Let's be clear from the start what this book is about,"
writes Roger Sanjek. ""Race is the framework of ranked categories,
segmenting the human population, that was developed by Western
Europeans following their global expansion." To contemporary social
scientists, this ranking is baseless, though it has had
all-too-real effects. Drawing on anthropology, history, sociology,
ethnic studies, and women's studies, this volume explores the role
of race in a variety of cultural and historical contexts. The
contributors show how racial ideologies intersect with gender,
class, nation and sexuality in the formation of complex social
identities and hierarchies. The essays address such topics as race
and Egyptian nationalism, the construction of ""whiteness" in the
United States, and the transformation of racial categories in
post-colonial Haiti. They demonstrate how social elites and members
of subordinated groups construct and rework racial meanings and
identities within the context of global political, economic, and
cultural change. Race provides a comprehensive and empirically
grounded survey of contemporary theoretical approaches to studying
the complex interplay of race, power, and identity.
