Delimiting Modernities - Conceptual Challenges and Regional Responses (Hardcover): Sven Trakulhun, Ralph Weber Delimiting Modernities - Conceptual Challenges and Regional Responses (Hardcover)
Sven Trakulhun, Ralph Weber; Contributions by Pheng Cheah, Arif Dirlik, Wolfgang Knoebl, …
R2,859 Discovery Miles 28 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This collection seeks to contribute to the many long-standing discussions on modernity, but also and more specifically to the more recent debates over trends to pluralize modernity. These debates are current in many different academic disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, literature and postcolonial studies. Hitherto, most engagements with modernity in the plural have remained conspicuously confined to one or other intra-disciplinary notion of modernities, such as that of Shmuel Eisenstadt's "multiple modernities" which has triggered a host of conference papers and publications largely within sociology: all the while, it seems that the literatures, for instance, of multiple modernities and alternative modernities are each distinguished by the fact that one ignores the other. It is the principal aim of this edited volume to subject these disciplinary discussions to a more encompassing view, assembling contributions from different scholars who not only work in different disciplines and regional settings, but who also engage with their research topics in a variety of approaches and at different levels of analysis. The volume thus transcends the sometimes narrow boundaries of the debates over modernities within the established academic disciplines and seeks to turn the unavoidable friction brought about by this interdisciplinary setting into most original and insightful scholarship.

The Jews Of Egypt - A Mediterranean Society In Modern Times (Hardcover): Maurice Mizrahi, Gudrun Kramer, Shimon Shamir, Thomas... The Jews Of Egypt - A Mediterranean Society In Modern Times (Hardcover)
Maurice Mizrahi, Gudrun Kramer, Shimon Shamir, Thomas Mayer
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Jewish community of Egypt in modem times-now practically non-existent-consisted in part of autochthonous Jews who traced their origins to the periods of Maimonides, Philo, and even the prophet Jeremiah, thus making it the oldest community in the Jewish Diaspora. It also contained Jews who were part of the waves of immigration into Egypt that began in the second half of the nineteenth century. Coming mostly from Mediterranean countries, this predominantly Sephardic community maintained a network of commercial, social, and religious ties throughout the entire region, as well as a distinctively Mediterranean culture and life-style. In this volume, international scholars examine the Ottoman background of this community, the political status and participation of the Jews in Egyptian society, their role in economic life, their contributions to Egyptian-Arabic culture, and the images of the community in their own eyes, as well as in the eyes of Egyptians and Palestinian Jews. The book includes an extensive set of appendixes that illustrate the wide range of primary sources used by the contributors.

A History of Palestine - From the Ottoman Conquest to the Founding of the State of Israel (Paperback): Gudrun Kramer A History of Palestine - From the Ottoman Conquest to the Founding of the State of Israel (Paperback)
Gudrun Kramer; Translated by Graham Harman, Gudrun Kramer
R802 Discovery Miles 8 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It is impossible to understand Palestine today without a careful reading of its distant and recent past. But until now there has been no single volume in English that tells the history of the events--from the Ottoman Empire to the mid-twentieth century--that shaped modern Palestine. The first book of its kind, "A History of Palestine" offers a richly detailed interpretation of this critical region's evolution.

Starting with the prebiblical and biblical roots of Palestine, noted historian Gudrun Kramer examines the meanings ascribed to the land in the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions. Paying special attention to social and economic factors, she examines the gradual transformation of Palestine, following the history of the region through the Egyptian occupation of the mid-nineteenth century, the Ottoman reform era, and the British Mandate up to the founding of Israel in 1948. Focusing on the interactions of Arabs and Jews, "A History of Palestine" tells how these connections affected the cultural and political evolution of each community and Palestine as a whole."

Hasan al-Banna (1906 - 1949) was an Egyptian political reformer, best known for establishing the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organisation which today has millions of members and spans the Arab world. In this well written and impartial biography, Kramer gives a detailed account of al-Banna's life and work.
